Why won't you do trail maintenance?

So why won't you attend?

I know many of you live close to 2N49.

I know that some of you were wheeling today.

But we had a whole four vehicles on our maintenance day. Why won't you show up?

I, for one, think it's pretty shitty that we have 174 paid members (and who knows how many supporters or non-members) and almost nobody shows up for meetings our maintenance days.

I think a lot of people need to think about thigns some. Stop taking all the time and give back.

Good question Geoff,
for my part, me and my wife work all week long in some very busy positions.
The time on the weekends is mostly used for catching up on shopping and other duties around the household.
That said, I would really like to finally meet Stephan, the only other German here, and help out. It just doesn't line up with my time frame.
As far as I know we have a lot of bachelors as members here, so there is really no excuse for them not to show up.

I have had prior engagements on each of the trail work days. This afternoon I checked 28 miles of fence line for the desert tortoise awareness.This fence Prevents them from walking out onto the highway.
I like turtles.

when my tow rig and jeep are tow and trail ready, I will be there... been there in the past, will be there again... one question, why are all the trails we donate our time to in Big Bear?? why not down south where it wont cost half a weeks wages to get there for us southlanders? I know, " if you want to help down south volunteer for a trail down south... blah blah blah " easier said then done with the core of the so cal group in the LA area... if it is that easy then please tell me how we can adopt a trail down here

I wish I had the time and money to do every single one of these trail maintenence days but I have many issues going on right now. I suspect there are many folks on here who are having similar issues. Having an ex-wife who sucks up a huge chunk of your income because she's too gawdam lazy to work full time really sucks. My rent was 2 weeks overdue and now I have nearly a grand in overdue bills. I am selling everything I can bear to part with to try to pull myself out of the hole but it is not working so far. Add to that I was essentially demoted because of my ex's antics (police having to be called 6 times in the last 2 months) and you start to see a picture of my own personal hell right now. [rant over]

Because the SBNF has the best Adopt-A-Trail system. Other forests aren't nearly as pro-access as the SBNF. I don't know how much opportunity there is in the South side of the CNF, perhaps a local should make contact and check it out.

By the way, it's not like these trails are in my back yard either. Yesterday I clocked in 193 miles for going to 2N49, running the trail, and returning. A typical 2N04 trip for me is 269 miles round trip plus trail. The quarterly meetings are 110 miles round trip for me on a work night.

Corral Canyon does seem to have some sort of AAT system as other clubs have recently built new (and fun) jeep trails out there. I would almost say they are more pro-access than in Big Bear.

a quick google search shows that there are a few clubs that have addopted and cut new trails. gunslinger was cut and adopted by terra del sol, for example.
Most of these trails are open to red/green stickered, and street legal vehicles, BTW.

I was attending the meetings every session for several years, but since i have been absent from here I haven't been reminded of them. 99.9% of my camping/wheeling is in the desert not the mountains. That being said, I spend several hours (up to several days) every trip I go out cleaning up the desert leaving it better than I found it.
I have been in the desert my entire life (44 yrs and counting) and was taught tread lightly before I could even walk or talk, and have passed it on to all I know and to my son who will no doubt pass it to his family and friends.
I understand this chapter has it's trails in the mountains and is rightfully proud of them, but trail maintenance is important everywhere. The fact that enough people aren't actively involved in the trails of this chapter doesn't mean that they are not active in helping to maintain all our other open land in this state to keep them all open.

So, I apologize to the management of So Cal that I do not attend the trail maintenance trips, but the areas I visit regularly are the ones I help maintain and need my help just as much as any other trails. They are very important to me and my family's heritage and are also more convenient for me to visit. If So Cal adopted some desert lands then I guess I would be able to officially contribute to the cause, until then I will go on quietly doing my part in my favorite areas to make them cleaner and stay open for future generations.

This conversation brings up some interesting points. Clearly, there are specific Adopt a Trail maintenance activities, and it would be nice to see better participation there. But, as several have mentioned, there are many other places where members and users are doing trail maintenance. Some of this tends to be unseen.

Perhaps there could be a way to document some of this other maintenance activity as well? I think it would show that as a whole, does a great deal to keep our trails open and clean, even if not on a designated route. I know for myself, any time I'm out on the trail, I am picking up trash if I see it. I think most of us do that, because it is the right thing, not because it's required.

Maybe a heavily modded thread where people could post their maintenance and clean-up activities? Just a thought.

Most of the time I'm either working, out of town, or both.

Keep posting the runs up, I'll make them as I can.

It would be nice to work out some sort of carpool system with other members local to me. My jeep doesn't get terrible mileage when it's running :roflmao: I'd gladly split the cost of fuel with some other members, but the $$ it would cost to do it on my own makes it extremely difficult.
