2001 XJ interior lights and turn signal LEDs

Good afternoon fine folks,

It's been ages since I've been here, most notably because it's been over a year since my late, lamented 2000 stopped running. I gave up on it a few months ago and what do you know the Jeep Distribution System came through, although of course AFTER I moved, using my old VW GTI to carry most of my stuff. But, at least I have another XJ even if later than I wanted. I got almost the twin of my 2000, this one's a 2001 Limited so nicer inside (except the driver's seat is trash) and in much better shape with only 200K miles. Even better it has brand new KO2s on it, I got ANOTHER set of Icons LOL and it has the 242 transfer case which I prefer. Also AW4 as both of my previous ones have been. Bad news is I think my old one has already been crushed, otherwise I would buy the driveshafts and other parts off of it, maybe even the Up Country springs and front skid. I did save the rear one and the trailer hitch, I'm undecided if I should put that on or use the Rigid bumper I have in storage which has a Class 3 hitch built in. It has a JCR front bumper with receiver already installed so that's nice although it needs to be sanded down and repainted. Cool way to stay low COG but maintain approach angle.

Anyway, I finally got it through inspection and am picking away at the last few things that need to be fixed. Today I got a care package from Aero-Lites with some LED bulbs I got for the dome lights. I went with them even though they're more expensive because unlike many people I do NOT like my lights to "look" like LEDs, I prefer the original incandescent look, and they offer 3000K (typical incan is ~2700K). I just don't want to cook 23 year old plastic any more than it already is, and I figure if I get good ones they will last. I also replaced my taillight bulbs and backup lights bulbs with Sylvania Zevos, now the backup lights do look like LEDs probably 6000K or so but whatever, I don't have to look at them :)

First, something I've found - both my 2000 and 2001 had the footwell lights (the 99 did not) but they didn't take any bulb that was listed in any chart, not even the owner's manual. The 2000 didn't have any installed when I got it so I used R5W as those seemed appropriate (AKA 5007 - I'm a Euro car guy so that's what I had) the 2001 had bulbs in there although one was burned out and those are 89s which are the same format but 7.5W instead of 5W. In any case I replaced them with LEDs so they wouldn't cook the lenses, just popped those in a few minutes ago - I used the Aero-Lites 3000K 10-30V versions as there's no need to dim dome lights (if you order "12V" they are dimmable; the "10-30V" do not dim). I also picked up some similar 3000K, 10-30V 194s for the rest of the dome lights also from Aero-Lites, but I haven't addressed those yet. I'm going to leave myself some time as the driver's map light is busted and I am hoping all the parts are still there so I can glue it back together (I have an OHC so there's four of them.) I also got two of the 12V versions because the 242 shift quadrant is burned so I'll replace that bulb and the PRNDL backlight bulb too with LED.

Now for the question. I got a pack of "Qasim" 3000K 578s from Amazon as Aero-Lites didn't have any that format https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B1ZT6FFN

I went to replace the cargo light and those won't work, as the contacts grip the round bit and don't use the loops. Can anyone recommend a 2700-3000K LED "bulb" I can use there that will work, or should I just take what I have and solder it in place? I'd like to do the underhood light as well, but baby steps...

And another question. I would try it but it'd be expensive and I don't want to invest the money unless I know it'll work - if I replaced all the turn signal lights with LEDs (I would probably use Zevos again for the 3157As and Aero-Lites again for the 194As) would it work? I'm guessing there would be problems because of the way the front side markers are wired. Has anyone tried it?

One more. Are replacement light assemblies available for the OHC if it becomes necessary? I have seen them for without OHC but not with.

Finally has anyone found a quality LED 921 for the CHMSL? and a replacement lens? At least as of a couple years ago I couldn't find either, I ended up polishing and clearcoating my old one as it had turned decidedly pink. If there's one light that really SHOULD be an LED though it's that one for the quick rise time and visibility.

Lighting is going to be a big project in this one, I'm already trying to figure out what fog lights I want (thinking Diode Dynamics SS3 Max?) and then maybe replacing the KC lights currently on there with either a light bar or better driving lights, but right now I'm working on getting everything working first before spending money on upgrades...

Every lamp in my 2000 is led ( including the instrument cluster) except for the two front 2 side markers, I tried different configurations/polarities with no luck to get that to work. Color doesn't have any impact on heat and all the lamp configurations are available.

Tried to sort through that post and got lost a couple times.
But as far interior lights go for LED's I just went with the kit from onewaylights.com years ago.
Gave me everything I need for the interior but not including ones for the gauges.
As far as running LED's for all the exterior lights everything was pretty cut and dry with the exception of the 194's in the side markers.
Used a non polarity bulb here and they work.
Since it was not as cut and dry and you would think did a write up about it.

Thank you! You def. answered one of my questions which is if you use Zevo 3157s for the turn signals but leave the incandescent 194s in place, it still works correct? So I can have LEDs for sure in the other positions

I see you didn't swap the CHMSL any input on what might work for the cargo light?

What is the CHMSL?
Almost positive that my kit from onewaylights.com had the cargo light too.
Want to say when messing around the regular 194's did work but my turn signals had a faint glow to them all the time.
That part I am pretty sure I wrote about in my write up.

CHMSL = Center High Mount Stop Light

I just need the cargo light though I have all the 194s already. Also am looking for preferably 2700-3000k. yeah I know I'm picky

On my 2000, the 3rd brake light was a 921.

So... my 242 quadrant showed up so it was time to get at and replace some stuff. The original 194 had actually burned a little hole in the plastic. I replaced that and the PRNDL with some warm white "10-30V" ones from Aero-Lites. They work great but I wonder if they're too bright - we'll see next time I drive at night. The PRNDL wasn't much better; some day when it's not so bloody hot out I'll have to take it out again and clean it and glue it back together - the clear part is OK, but all the pieces are just floating loose.

Feeling froggy, I decided to replace the rear wiper switch too, fortunately I guessed right and now I have a mostly functional rear wiper. I think I'm going to have to replace the arm though because it's both bound up and the paint is burned off - I COULD fix it but working outside in this weather is brutal. Protip: lube the rear wiper arm pivot when you do your door hinges - I think that it doesn't flex enough in use and so if you park outside and don't use it often it will bind up because I've seen this on all three of my XJs.

Here's where things went bad. Apparently the dome lights if you have an OHC are ALL 578s but ALL clip in instead of using the loops so I had to stop there; the ones I bought will not work in any position. I also found that the reason my driver's map light switch is "busted" is that the post that holds the light assembly to the OHC has disintegrated and the other one will probably do so as well if I screw with it too much, so I have to repair that somehow. I'm thinking the only way I'm likely going to fix this is to drill through the OHC, put some flathead screws in from the other side, and make spacers out of little plastic or brass tubes from the hobby shop and then attach the light with nuts. I'll have two screw heads showing that aren't stock but I don't see any way around it. Any better ideas? I'm assuming that the main piece of the OHC is NLA and the ones used, which I'd have to pay shipping for, likely are just as brittle yes?

So I still have to find some warm white 578s that will clip in like festoon bulbs (but they're larger diameter), I now need six of them (five dome lights and the underhood light) and now I'm more motivated to replace more of the dash lights with LED because I'm seeing how badly they've damaged the plastic - I guess the PO must have driven a lot at night with the dash lights on bright.

I should add, I did see these https://www.ravenmech.com/products/...ee-xj-interior-led-set?variant=43320783175853 it looks like a) they're about 5-6000K which I am trying to avoid, and also they'll be sold out soon as it looks like those products are being phased out. (this is the One Way Light set mentioned above)

I have not done squat about the CHMSL although I noticed backing into a parking space at work that that was looking pretty shabby next to the Zevos in the taillights, definitely not as bright and the lamp itself needs to be polished and cleared, so that may get bumped up. I've only been rear ended twice in the last couple years, in cars with perfectly working lights... (and both had factory LED CHMSLs)
