GUNS & AMMO

So I stumbled upon this investigative piece by CNBC about the Remington model 700 rifle and a supposed long-running problem with inadvertent discharge. Apparently with the original Walker trigger that there are thousands of documented incidents where the just the safety was turned off or the bolt was moved and the rifle discharged. Scary. But it's only one news article and one point of view, so I have to take it with a grain of salt. Anyone heard anything else about it?

Heard about it but if you point the muzzle downrange like you are supposed to when its loaded then you shouldn't need to worry too much. I have one in the gun cabinet and its never done that.

Yes there is a problem with some 700s.

Yes that piece was overblown sensationalism.

The truth is always somewhere in the middle.

Ditto

Kind of like the exploding gas tanks on Chevy trucks or Jeep grand Cherokees a decade later.

The roll over prone four wheeled drive vehicles, the "plastic" pistol (When glock first came out.)

I have had plenty of guns malfunction and go full auto on me. Follow the basic principles of safe handling and your okay as was mentioned above.

Wasn't there some video of a firearms safety instructor shooting himself in the leg or something???

We went camping and shooting. Or rather tried to camp and shoot this weekend.

We have a special little spot out on the west desert that someone has set up target stands at 50-250 yards in this natural depression. Usually it keeps the wind out but not this weekend. We got there Friday night and the weather was good but the wind picked up and it turned super ugly today. When we left there was sustained winds over 50 mph. Enough we saw a semi tipped over on the way home.

The winds stayed away long enough for my son to put damn near a full brick of rounds through his new Mossburg tactical .22 he got this morning for his birthday.

That's cool you mentioned that he got it for a birthday present in an an earlier post. Was he excited over his new "toy"?

My oldest is 4 1/2 and can't wait to actually teach him to shoot. He already has an interest. He might get me in trouble though, he told a school mate's mom he was going to get me a "gun" for my birthday this coming month. With the modern society they might freak out and jump to some wild conclusion........use to not be that way.

Question for you guys.....
What average range are you shooting your pistols at?

After readin a lot of posts/write-ups, seems as tho I am shooting at too far a distance and should use larger targets..... :dunno:

3" dots at 5m.
6" dots at 7-10m. Then again, you don't go to war with dots do ya?

Never shoot further than 25m with pistol. Which is half effective range. Don't get me wrong, I've take steel out at 400m with a 9mm, just for $hits and giggles.

Once you get proper mechanics down at close range (ie. not throwing a single round out of several mags) I would move further away. Get this down and you can start to work on speed.

Depends on what your goal is. Me? I train between 5-20yds.

In IDPA, the "practical" pistol shooting sport, the -0pt scoring zone of the target is an 8" circle in the COM, or a 6"x6" head box of a silhouette shaped target. Most course of fires include targets from point blank range to 30yds or so, although 75% of the shots must be 15yds or less.

So for me, that's how I practice. Typically between 5-15 yds at an 8" circle.

If you want to be a bullseye shooter and see how tight you can get those groups, there's probably nothing wrong with what you're doing. That's what I used to do before I got the urge to draw from holster, shoot as fast as I can and get good hits, moving and shooting, etc. :D

I shoot pistol from 1ft to 100yards. Targets range from the size of a person down to eggs. Whatever distance you are shooting at/whatever target you are shooting at is the right distance/target, if you'reon target and getting better.

Target size shouldnt matter anyway. Every center of every target is the exact same size.

I was browsing Sportsman's warehouse today and came across these there. I had gotten an email from Brownell's awhile back advertising from them that they were $10 on sale, but with shipping two of them cost $8+ to ship. AT the time I passed on buying from Brownell's.

When I saw them at Sportsman's for $12.99 on sale I impulsively picked up two of them because I secretly really wanted some.

Nice boxes for $13.00, normal price there was $24.99, didnt think the novelty was worth that much....................

On a totally different side-note, getting that stock photo from MTM to post here for the ammo box I bought. The page they have to advertise it has another picture, this one;

Three things;

First off; they saying sensible dressed women who are well groomed are only there to hold your ammo can and nothing more?

Second; What is with the Flannel? I don't even own conventional pattern Flannel like that. I do have a hat that looks like that. Are they saying I need to a flannel shirt to be prepared for the possible upcoming Zombie Apocalypse???

Third; What is with the guy holding his AR like it is his Johnson. He doesn't even have a magazine in the rifle. They grabbed the ammo can but forgot the magazines? ..............Maybe he is Zombie bait, the real survivors are hiding ready to ambush a pack of brain eating freaks.

:jester:

Zombies wouldn't be caught dead in Flannel.

Well we usually shoot in the middle side of the "reasonable" distance - approx 15-25 yards. Most of the time its moving and acquiring multiple targets of about 4-5" diameter.
Just seems everyone is shooting pistols suuuuper close up and most of what i see and read is in the sub 10yard range.
Just didn't know if i was looking at it wrong or what?
I figure if Im relatively quick and accurate at that distance anything.closer should be easy to hit.

People shoot close because 99% of shootings take place within 15 feet.

Nothing wrong practicing for further distance, especially if you are competitively shooting but honestly. If you have to shoot someone past about 30 ft you probably don't need to shoot them in the first place. Obviously there are exceptions.

Right. I dont imagine there is a time for having to shoot at larger distances with a pistol. But id rather practice far and be prepped for when its closer, than practice close and not be prepped for far.

Well, I gave the Marlin a new looks today. There were a lot of scratches and a few nicks in the prior finish, and I wanted to redo the thumb groove to fit better on my fat hands. After a good amount of sanding and sanding and sanding, I restained it. I couldnt find the lighter "grey" i was looking for, so ended up settling with a black, might strip down and redo once I can find some good "grey".
Also added a lil thicker pad to the back for some incresed length.
