SE Utah and Colorado? 2010

I don't live in Moab, but have visited many times. I hear there are a few rattle snakes around, but I have never seen one. I have slept outside on top of a foam pad and sleeping bag many nights and never had a problem. I never used a net. There are no mosquitos unless you set up camp within a hundred yards of the river or a stock tank. Any rain water does not stay long enough to breed them. I would rather sleep under the stars there than here or where you live. When I was a kid, we used to call those little bastards the Canadian Air Force :sunshine:.
 
That'd be cool to cross paths with you.. sounds like you have a great trip in the works. Whats your plans?

I have a quick question for those that live in the area or have spent time camping in either state. While my wife and I have a RTT, our friends don't. They are going to pitch their tent on the ground but they also want to try sleeping under the stars on nice nights. We do it all the time up here in the backcountry when we hike and pack ultralight, but we don't really have snakes/killer bugs up here that you might have down there. If they want to sleep without a shelter sometimes, would a bug net suffice or is it not really recommended down there at all?

I only ask because I have no idea what you guys have down there for creepy crawlies and things that like to cuddle with you in the night. Up here we really don't have much that can harm you (no snakes or spiders or scorpions or anything like that) the worst we have are mosquitoes... haha.

We are leaving here (Edmonton) on the 1st of Sept. and heading down to Yellowstone. We plan to spend a couple days there then head down to CO right away after that. Once we hit CO, we just plan to stick to trails as much as possible and just wheel and camp.

I have downloaded all the GPS tracks that InterpidXJ and Handlebars have posted on here so we'll just pick trails and go from one to the other. We've never been down there before so we don't have a very rigid schedule... just camp, hike, wheel, check out the sites etc... if you have any suggestions I'm all ears! We're having a bit of trouble planning this trip without any firsthand knowledge of the area. All I know is what I have read online so far so I expect this trip will be an eye opener.

We're very into hiking/geocaching/paddling sports/biking... basically anything outside. I don't think we'll bring our bikes but we might sneak a kayak or two onto the trailer if there's room. My wife is also into geology so we're hoping to spend some time in the Green River area.
 
Sounds like a great trip.

Assuming you'll find your way down to the San Juans and Ouray/Telluride areas. Lots to see there. Colorado is just so littered with scenic trails it's tough to select an area. Pearl Pass is on my must do list this time around because i hear it is so highly regarded by even CO natives. I found i liked the Gunnison NF area last visit as well... and theres a ton to see in this area as well.

Bottom line is, you'll love your time there and will regret not being able to see it all. You'll want to plan another visit... just dont make it 12 years like i did.


You can youtube the popular trails to get a taste..
 
I'm hoping I can find a way to meet you guys down there. My wife got real sick last week with a migraine that lasted for almost seven days. She burned through what leave from work she had left. It's possible I might try to find my way down there by myself.
 
Hey Ryan Hope your wife is feeling better. I might be up for this one as well. Sorry I missed out on the geocache run. I will probably regret that later if not sooner. I am in the same situation as my wife is basically going to be out of leave as well. If you are going and don't mind I might follow you down. We are heading north to Alaska to visit friends and celebrate our anniversary next week and that will kill the rest of her time off. I still have plenty so I may try and take a few days to go. If I can't make this one I am looking at the run in October. I will have to look at the bank account and deal with work so I will let you know around the 24th.

Hope she's feelin better Ryan. Does she typically suffer from Migranes?

Sheridan but one of my best buds has been in Wasilla since we graduated. I try to visit him every few years and do some hunting or fishing. Last trip was for moose. Whacked a nice bull and spent thre days packing out meat. This trip is to celebrate 17 years with the wife, look at land, and maybe fish. Had to save money for the trip but may have enough left over for a run to Utah.
 
Yeah, John she suffers from them a lot but this is the worst one that I could remember. Even the shots that the doc gives her which knocks her out for two days but always cure them didn't work.

I took her to the Uintahs for the Geostash and BigBear got her drunk on home made brandy. She woke up feeling better LOL
 
How is the camping space for the permitted areas? If these are full I may try to go a bit further up the trail wher its open for dispersed camping.

White Rim trail is in Canyonlands NP and it is camping by permit only...all the way through the park. Outside of Canyonlands there really isn't any restrictions.
 
Been down there a bunch of times. I love the desert west of the Abajos and would like to have some land there someday. In the past I have mostly taken pack trips into remote canyons with some of the archaeologists I work with. I am pretty familiar with the area just south of the park and its southern area. If nothing else I may just camp down that way and wait with some cold beverages, and snacks.
 
There is no dispersed camping on WRT.. permit on reserved site only. I had to apply 10 months ago to get my permit. These fill up fast..

As it stands now i have a slot for Ryan if he can make it.. he and i have talked about this for a long while. If Ryan cannot make it i have promised another guy first shot at the opening.

I believe we are in the same situation the following day in Needles district.

But... Lake Powell is non permit and there would be no issue if you were to want to run down that way.
 
No problem I know the park and they are picky. Where will you be exiting the park? I may just catch up with you there.

Postal, we leave Canyonlands twice, on the 10th i think we come out on 191 outside Needles district at or a bit north of Monticello. Drop me a PM if you think you might be able to meet up with us.

Ryan, my wife gets migranes occasionally. Nothing compared to what it sounds like your wife experiences. Stock up on the hooch.. :laugh:


I'm loving that this trip is so close and i'm finally going to make it there. We scratched heading into Utah back in 98 because the temps were around 110.. we opted to stay in the San Juans.
 
If the is the case you will most likely be exiting via 211 to 191 on the 10th. I will probably travel back into Beef Basin to play in the ruins in that area and then come out on the 10th to catch up with you. If I am not there I may be down towards Owl Canyon or Dark Canyon. I might try to talk my brother into coming along. He does not own a Cherokee...maybe he will upgrade from the Tundra someday LOL. At any rate I will PM both you and Ryan when I get back from Alaska if I have the time and the cash to make the trip. Either way thanks for considering my participation.
