Rubicon Trail - June 26 - 30, 2010

I am okay with buying two more boxes but my total will push me up to $150. I am definately going to need some reimbursment, unless we can get two other guys to each pick up one pack of 12.

X3 about reusing, especially if Julio uses it before me!

I might pick up a box of 12, maybe someone else wants to pick up an additional box?

You don't leave the WAG bags on the john, each person uses their own, and each person keeps and carries out their own. The pooh powder turns the waste into a gel and it's wrapped in a couple of plastic bags, simple to use a couple times and pretty sanitary. The idea should be for each person to pay $2-3 for each bag they use.

Don't be afraid. :D

I would pay for the usage of the bags. IM for sure going so ill need a couple DOnt worry brad. I got you!

So im gonna bring my ice chest, camping gear, spares, and anything else i may need. As far as food. ill have some carne asada and burger patties for dinner and sammiches and what nots for snacks. Tuna, canned beans and anything else thats easy to make is what ill be carrying. I dont usually get fancy with foods i bring to camp so if anyone has any good ideas for snacks and food let us know.

As far as what has been said, i couldn't agree more. Sounds like it will be wet but if we go and pay attention to what we are doing we can have a good time while we are out there.

Since Goatman has used this PETT system I am going with his advice and will plan to use each bag a few times. We have 24 bags and if we use each one 2-3 times we should be fine with 8 people. I don't think we need to buy more bags.

Can you not just dig a cat hole off the trail?

I was told that's a big no no. Not sure why, but the last thing I want to do is start breaking rules during the mudy season and get the trail closed down or get some huge fine. I am way too poor to deal with stupid fines.

Board of Supervisors Declares a State of Local Emergency

PLACERVILLE - The Board of Supervisors passed a resolution today declaring that a State of Local Emergency exists in association with the use of the Spider Lake & Little Sluice Area adjacent to the Rubicon Trail, a popular recreational trail located in the upper Sierra Nevada within El Dorado County. A significant amount of human fecal waste has been deposited within this area creating a health and safety threat to the users of the Rubicon Trail, and a health and safety threat to adjacent lakes and streams, which in turn flow into the American River Watershed. The unsanitary conditions of this area of the Rubicon Trail have resulted in the degradation of an environmentally sensitive area. Effective today the Spider Lake, Little Sluice Area will be closed for recreational use for 120 days. The closure will not affect the use of the Rubicon Trail as a thoroughfare.

It never re-opened. The 120 day closure turned into a permanent closure, and the area between Little Sluice and Spider lake was our favorite wheeling area on the 'Con, and Spider Lake was our favorite place to camp. The closure was due to human waste and overuse. Unfortunately, most of the trail is on rock with a little dirt covering in areas, and with as many people as run the trail, the poop and paper situation can get out of control. This is why everyone is asked to use their own toilet system. Friends of the Rubicon has been giving out cardboard PETT toilets and WAG bags to try to educate folks.

There are some outhouses along the trail if you know where they are, like near the first creek crossing, near the top of Walker, at Buck Island, etc. However, some of them the Forest rangers prefer you not to use (like the ones at Buck Island) since they aren't really legal. There are quite a few outhouses at Rubicon Springs, and that's private property so there are no issues.

If you're plan is to go all the way to the Springs your first day, and camp there a couple of days, you probably don't need the PETT.

Since I have never ran the Rubicon, I don't really know what our plan is. Odds are we wont know until we all get together the first night and put it to a vote.

I just got off the phone with Vince and he asked if anyone was bringing a portable welder? My anwer was "I don't know". He stated that this would be a great addition for this run. He has witnessed lots of carnage on the trail and lots of it could have been repaired with a portable welder. Anyone coming has access to one?

Jumper cables and welding rod? lol

Is that the best we can do? Maybe we can get someone on here to let us borrow one for the trip. I would even be willing to rent one just for the added security.

Jumper cables and welding rod worked to get Remi all the way home when his front axle tube split all the way around on the 'Con in '04.

Well... If it will get the job done then let's just go with that.

I always carry cables, rod, and goggles with arc. welding lens. And they have been used many times. Remi welded the Knuckel up on the Sleigh one time and I drove out. A couple random short pieces of angle iron can help to field fab parts as well.
You guys are going to have a few deep water crossings so make sure your stuff on the floor in the back is in trash bags to keep it dry. I will be there in July after it dries out a little, have fun and be safe....SANTA

Looks like I'm in guys!
Oh, no...who invited Sean? :D Just kidding... sounds like we're gonna have a great group going!
