Rubicon Trail - June 26 - 30, 2010

The flames rise gently from my wood every morning!
You know, I hear even mild burning sensations should still be treated with antibiotics, John... Unless they're friction burns? :eyes:

you guys scare me! lastara
as luck would have it i travel with Jax, one of my 2 Rottweilers.
he has built in gaydar & will keep me safe. :eyes:

Don't be scared... They're a great bunch of freaks! I mean guys!

I live at 6200 feet and got over 10 feet of snow this winter. I love driving in the snow and mudy slush. It adds an extra element of tricky driving. By lookin at the pics and knowing the weather up there I would guess that last 1'-2' will be completely gone within the next 2 weeks. We should arrive just as the last few patches of snow are melting. We may find some mud, but that will just make it more fun. I am getting excited. My rig has all new tires, fluids, shocks, fire extinguisher, limit straps, and a much needed first aid kit. All I need to do now is replace my bent front driveshaft. The new one is sitting in the garage ready to go in.

quit lagging! get her done!

We really need to make a list of who is bringing what. I was told we need permits to have a portable anything on the trail as far as cooking grills and stoves. We also need wag bags and anything else essential to our trip.

if the trail is still wet, yeah you should stay off.

hop on to the friends of the rubicon list google group and ask for a current status of the trail, see if its more wet than should be run.

The Rubithon is scheduled to start in 4 days... we could see what kind of reports come out of that...

Yeah, lets not change it until we get some feedback from those who have gone recently. There was a post on pirate of a guy who hiked most of the trail and a good amount of snow was still on the trail. Dont know that in 2 weeks it will be good for wheelin it. Lets see what happens.

Well, I think it comes down to this... even if folks are able to get through, it is pretty much certain that the trail will be wet and muddy by the time we are scheduled to go.

If we want to wait for it to be dry, I think we will have to postpone the trip.

If we cannot postpone the trip, then we risk contributing to the problems (assuming we can actually get through).

We can (and I hope we would all agree) minimize our impact by taking it slow, not allowing our tires to spin free (but winching instead), being dfiligent about staying on the established trail, etc.

No matter what, we will impact the trail... be it dry or wet. We have to decide what level of impact we are comfortable with, and it we feel we can run it while wet and be certain to minimize our impact.

Of course, that's just my opinion...

What do others think?

I don't think we are going to make much of a difference on the trail if we go or don't. There seems to be a LOT of groups from multiple off road clubs running the rubicon now and during the time just before and after we go. One less group of 4 or 5 Jeeps in the big picture will make no difference as long as we follow the rules and respect our environment. I would like to go rain, snow, mud, or whatever. If we need to postpone I would be okay with that. I am a teacher and do not have to go back to work until August 9th, but I would prefer to just stick to our original plans.
