Technically that's not it either.

Two part problem. 1: Pressure 2: Chamber

5.56 spec pressure is a bit higher than .223.

Chamber is slightly different between 5.56 spec and .223 spec. Nuts and bolts are that when loaded with their respective loads a 5.56 round may generate an overpressure condition in a .223 chamber because of the way the chamber is cut. An in-spec .223 will never be stronger than a 5.56 so it is perfectly fine to fire a .223 through a 5.56.

Most ARs you'll find these days are built to 5.56 spec.

Trivia:

The situation is reversed for .308 and 7.62 NATO. In those cartridges the .308 is the stronger one, therefore when getting a rifle for them it would be more desirable to get one made for .308.

I am in the market for a beginner ar-15, any recommendations?

My buddy told me I want something that shoots 5.56 and .223 but that is as far as I know besides some name brands. I am on a college kid budget but I am hooked on shooting the .223 now.

I am in wyoming now too so I can buy Pmags and all that fun stuff I couldnt when I lived in colorado.

Look at www.palmettostatearmory.com, they have great prices and very reasonable shipping charges. Built my gun fir under 900 using blemish parts, only one with a visible issue is the barrel but my gun will get beat up so I'm not too worried.

Yeah, its more of a pressure thing between the two. 5.56 is loaded hotter and expands more after being fired. Enough to destroy a .223 weapon? I highly doubt it. More than likely you'll just get a bunch of FTE's (failure to eject). In fact we had a bunch of our M16's with "E" barrels that had serious problems with that. Supposedly there was a tooling malfunction when they were made, but my theory is that they were actually chambered .223 by mistake.

I'm sure Chris can some up with some sort of conspiracy theory about how those barrels were put out specifically to hamper the Army's ability to conduct war, but considering they gave them to the National Guard it obviously failed. :D

It was a true patriot in the factory trying to hamper the Guard's ability to round us all up and put us in FEMA camps. :tinfoil:

Wait, aren't you the one that can't afford 4 new tires?

I am the same way when it comes to buying guns. lol.
hahahaha
in all fairness i can afford the shotty over the 3 month lay away plan. but i am in bad need of tires yes. i think i ll go for 2 good used tires and then buy 2 new ones just before winter comes knocking. i am TRYING to replace chaotic financial management with planning and responsible actions. get stable and work my way up .

Finally took some time today and did a complete trigger job on my Smith & Wesson M&P. Tore the whole pistol down, changed the working angle of the sear, trigger bar, and plunger. Polished everything up and ran it through my ultrasonic cleaner. The difference was night and day. It dropped the trigger pull from 7lbs down to 4lbs and took out all of the grittiness that's in it from the factory.

It feels like an entirely new pistol. Happy happy happy.

Sounds good. I'll be around.

I finally picked up my Ruger Vaquero the other day in .357 Magnum/.38 Special. I'm very excited to shoot it. Now I just need to save up for my same caliber lever action to complete the set. Here it is with my trusty Winchester Model 94 30-30 Lever.

You Colorado cowboys rock! I'd love to have an excuse to have a set up like that. I'd just look like a poser out here.

It really gets under my skin when kids that have lived their entire lives within the GB city limits, never been on a ranch, farm or out west and drive a Malibu thinking they're cowboys because they listen to country music, wear cowboy boots & hat, put on a big belt buckle and chew.

Identity crisis much?

How's that Vaquero fair? I've never shot one, just seen them on the shelf and tv.

GUNS & AMMO

I'm far from a cowboy. If anything I look like a skin-head punk rocker. I did grow up around ranches in Montana before moving to the big city that is Denver. I wanted the lever action and the revolver because I think they're cool, not to dress up and pretend I'm Clint Eastwood or John Wayne in some classic western.

I just got the Vaquero so I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet unfortunately. I am very excited to though.

You have a set of assless chaps and you know it.

Seriously though, that Vaquero is a fine pistol. Let us know how it fires. I've never shot one.

Dad snagged a Vaquero at a U.S. Marshall's auction a few months back and we shot it on father's day recently. While certainly a nice appearing gun in nickel, I didn't enjoy shooting it at all. I've never enjoyed the "wheel gun" grip style/design. The single action of it isn't real desirable for any real serious shooting needs but it's a cool hobby gun.
