Cage construction

The dimple dies showed up...so I did a little embossing...

So I managed to knock out a panel. I'm not overly thrilled with the pattern but I can always build another!

If I can find some sort of long arm press I'll do the hood too.

all you need is a 1/2"x4.5" bolt with two big washers a nut and an impact gun and a wrench, i think you can figure out the rest :kissyou:

Finished up the upper panels this morning. Unfortunately I had used all the unmolested sheet metal on prior attempts and got stuck using the slightly rusted stuff instead. Oh well...some filler and paint....
100_4097.jpg

Also finished buttoning up the fender that I had cut off earlier.
100_4100.jpg

and started the bumper. The reciever hitch will be going and I'm hoping to tie the whole thing into the spring hanger mounts. I'm not positive that is a good idea yet. I'll sit and stare at it after a few brews this afternoon.

I got some work done on the bumper....

Its friggin' hot our here so the garage time is getting more and more limited.

It needs to be towable by July 19th....

we will see....

Rick

So is this thing gonna be mid-engine or what? VW or Porsche aspirated?

Oh wait, you're not building a buggy.

Looks good Rick!

Spent some time thinking over the gas tank/fuel cell scenario this afternoon.
There is definitely a need for more than an eight gallon fuel cell and I already have a sixteen gallon tank right here. So I through around a tape measure and decided that the stock tank would work well. The entire rear sheet metal would need to go and a mount made onto the bumper as well as another in front...
100_4107.jpg

The sheet metal between the frame rails will go and the tank will sit flush with the top of the bumper.
Its a bit hot out in the garage today (118*) so I'll head out first thing in the morning. It might be done by tomorrow.....

The extra set of lines were from attempts to have the gas tank sit a bit further forward of the bumper....

damn that looks like a buggy!!

are you thinking the bumper will be strong enough to take the place of the sheet metal?? if so i think you might be wanting to add some tubing to reenforce the back as well.

There is a bit more clearancing to do so the tank will fit flush to the bumper, but you get the idea.
After I get it flush I'll build some lower supports...
then off to the shock mounts.

Looks good. I'm doing the same thing with my tank. The rest of the build looks like it's going good too.

Troy,
I'm thinkin' that the bumper will handle the load.
With the additional cage and all, it shouldn't be a problem.

About the gas tank,
Since this is not a buggy, or at least not a 'rock buggy' it needs to be able to haul a bit more fuel than most of the soft tanks had available. A true fuel cell could be had but I already had this tank and I'm thinking it will continue to do a fine job...
saves a few hundred over a new cell!!~

Rick,
I love the tank. I'm inspired to get mine done ASAP, at least till I need to remove the frame rails to link it out back.
