Cage construction

Getting closer, the seat belts won't work with my cross brace, the brace is too high, gotta' lower it about 2"....or come up with a quicker solution...

raise the seats 2" just for this run?

Then realize how much more you can see and decide to leave the seats higher, and worry about headroom till you decide you need a taller cage, and out comes the sawzall, bye bye says the windsheild, and hello says Rick to his new buggy :D

Looks good. I like the bumper and shock mounts.

Are you going to enclose the top of the gas tank?

I see the dimple plates are back, but don't look chrome to me.... :( ...

No tank cover, if it becomes nesc. then I'll build something, although I am looking at building an aluminium skid for the bottom of the tank.
I have some nice stainless for the dimple plates, right now there is a time crunch so some of the detail work will be left out.
Things like doors, paint, and general completion!

:D

About how many hours do you think you have into this whole project.

Its crunch time folks!
Today I added the cross brace behind the seats. The one I had built prior was too high for the seat belts. I'll probably cut the old one out but time is of the essence right now, so it stayed.

I stole the gas filler off of my recent acquisition and now I have a locking gas cap too!

The seats are mounted and ready to go...

Tomorrow will be dedicated to fixing the electrical issues. If I can't get them figured out by tomorrow night, it won't make the trip!
It really shouldn't be much of a problem....(should I have said that?)
Friday I need to build the tow bar mounts and take it for a test spin, connect it up and head on out to Big Bear!

Re: Buggy build

Title fixed....:twak: :flame:

I knew it would be a while before I could get back to my build. This morning I stole some time in order to get a bit more done before vacation starts.
100_4232.jpg

Installed the embossed panels. Decided to paint them white for a little aesthetic balance.
100_4233.jpg

Tied in the body to the cage. I will also be doing a bit more tie in at the front and back, but for now this will do.

Found a neat way to fill in around the pillar and rail supports, after it cures it can be cut down to flush. Easy and flexable.

Today is crunch day.....AGAIN!
The junk needs to be loaded into the trailer ASAP, so to that end some items will be...um.....well....put into the 'deferred build up' category.
Cut in the carpet in the front seat area, fixed the old doors to be used as removable trail doors and did some final button up work.
Took it for a high speed test run and as expected dust back fills into the cab area, although not as bad as I thought it would. The rear shocks might be a tad on the soft side but it landed smooth enough for now.
One more walk through and it gets loaded into the trailer!

Now that I think about it Rick, I wish you would have made that back tube straight and done without the bullet holes. Its to "round" for me, I would have liked seeing it a bit more square to fit the style of the XJ...
