Yet another... Build thread for an xj on 40s and one tons in norcal

I believe you can mix and match parts. IIRC, boostwerks or whomever it was that had some upgrade "kits" for sale were essentially that.

Did the whole trans go kit includig first gear lock. Definetly have to take your time. Working on the valve body is meticulous. I read the instructions like 5 times to make sure I understood before pulling the VB apart. Had to buy some knippex cutters since nothing i had can cut the springs off the top of the accumulators.

Also slapped 3 new solenoids in.

Replaced the shifter arm that goes through the tranny and the seal for it.

About to start tearing the front pump out .need to build
A make shift puller

The tranny is breaking off in chunks as I removed the pump. Had to make my owm puller extensions

I hope that is the "original" trans and not the "new" trans

alright good thing I grabbed this new transmission. I pulled mine out tonight after work- what a pain in the butt.

the actual body of the aw4 has a massive crack along the front of it, not the bell housing, but a good chunk after the bell housing.
Mine did that as well. I swapped back to a normal stock style mount and it helped.

Stock style trans mount ?
I was running a poly bushing similar to the stinky fab version
I should add the Honda civic hitting my trans pan didn't help. But I was fighting with it blowing through bell housings.

Nice work John, that cracked housing has me cringing just looking at it. seeing this stuff makes me want to hang onto my spare trans with hopes of a soft rebuild.

obligatory
"By the second tranny I was moving much faster"

Thanks karl. I got the trans in last
Night and tommy helped me get the tcase in. Ordered earls fittings for the trans line. One of the hard lines looks fubar. Also the flexplate was cracking so I swapped it for a almost new one Rob gave me . Had to swap the bushing in the pump since I scratched it good. And re did the seals. One really need to pull the bell housing to pull the pump with ease and I dont think you can properly install the pump with the bell housing on. Instaling the trans was a pain, especialy solo,
Especially when I didnt have the TC fully engaged in the oil pump.

yeah this thing was beat to hell. I am planning on doing a motor swap late summer to fall to maybe winter sometime in there. That should be the last of it.

I am just glad that transmission did not break apart on the freeway going 70mph...

moral of the story - if you replace your pan gasket 2-3 times and its still leaking, you better drop that transmission.

Ended up doing the earls fittings on the crappy line:

Got the jeep back together and it runs much better than before ! T case linkage is off and need to readjust it.

Shifts way better and holds gears longer than before
