Just got back from North Myrtle Beach, Saw a bunch of nice XJ's down there and on the trip down and back. I was in the Commander and My son was following me in his lifted red 96 XJ.

Who was driving the lifted white waggy with a load in the rooftop basket just south of Rockingham going south on highway 1 at the NC/SC line?

Had to be one of our NC members that was headed to the beach.

Do those lights not bounce a lot? I had 4 KC lights mounted on the front of a Surco rack and took them off because they bounced so much. I couldn't imagine how bad those bounce with the distance between the weight and the actual mount.

Chauffeured Ed around a mountain, got my Jeep dirty and drove 700 miles.

Wheeled the wee-wee outta my XJ until Saturday when it wouldn't pull the steep hills/rocky sections on trail 15 at Harlan. Had Flex take me around on Saturday.

Wheeled, ate, fixed, saw old friends, made tons of new friends, especially in the MWC and breathed XJ's for 4 days at the Crawl.

Also breathed enough dust for 4 weekends!

if you need any parts out of the 242 i have i can bring it with me when i drag the mj out there..... or we could put a 231 in it and be done

Do that. I leave it in 2wd almost all the time in the winter. Even in the snow, Its not that bad. fulltime isn't that necessary.

Drove up to the lake last night for some good times and fireworks. Looks like today is going to be a lazy day off of work..probably work on packing some stuff up for the move at the end of the month.

Got a new clunk in the steering of the Jeep this week...something between the steering column and the steering box, but it's not the shaft coming out of the box....it's something inside the firewall but i'm not sure what the heck it could be. Only happens turning left and it's at a certain point.

Doesn't sound like it's coming from there though...sounds like it's coming from somewhere in the steering linkage....I can put my ear up to it and hear it clearly from there. It's not a rotational clunk that varies with speed like a u-joint...it's a one time clunk every time I turn left.

Perhaps a video is in order...

maybe one of the steering shaft u joints?

See I thought that too, but crawling under the column with a friend turning the wheel they sounded fine..and the one at the box sounds fine as well....they're not binding. The clunk sounds like it's coming right inside the firewall...but I'm not sure what there is inside the firewall to clunk?

Thats what I would do, 242's suck

Since the general consensus is that I'm a goober for sticking with the 242 this long, I'll be swapping it pronto for a 231.

So High2by, don't hose me too bad on the one you have, okay? :D

I won't hose ya. :scottm: Besides, I got to help ya put it in.:D

As for the weekend, well, it was of the best times I have had. I'm already saving for next year!!!:looney:

I replaced my terrible JCR steering with Rock Krawler steering, replaced my Dodge Durango steering box with an XJ box, and now I can keep my Jeep on the road! I also finally got to wheel for the first time since March!

new thermostat in Avon....she runs cooler now

Upon further inspection with a friend, looks like a steering box may be in my future. Checked for play in the 2 piece shaft coming out of the box, there's play at the box end (past the u-joint and into the box..meaning it's not just a u-joint issue) and zero play up towards the column.

Took a video of what it sounds like:
