The Nail Salon

So when's the first trip out going to be? Maybe by then I'll have the Black Sheep fixed and you could show off some of them new trails you gus found last weekend.

Is this the rig yall where planning on bringing out to SF2012?

You should have.. btw, my truck started acting normal again after i got out of the mountains.. and my jeep was acting real sluggish yesterday.. I looked at the filter today, that trail dust killed it. Time for a cleaning.

After attending the Sierra Chapter's "Sierra Fest" this weekend, I'm now itching to get this pile moving again. Today I had a little bit of time to work on it, which meant ball joint and knuckle install.

The Harbor Freight Ball Joint Press is one of my favorite tools. I finally actually used it for it's original purpose. I installed the lowers first, then the uppers. They pressed in relatively easy.

Installed.

After the joints were pressed in, I bolted on the knuckle. These knuckles are off the old housing. I cleaned them up a bit, and smeared some never-seez inside the taper holes. Uppers torqued to 75ft/lbs, lowers to 80ft/lbs.

Lookin good man,
Kinda surprised you didnt shoot a fesh coat of paint on the knuckles, ...just for sh_ts & giggles.
And whats funny, I was JUST talking to a couple other Jeepers this weekend about how my Harbor Freight "Ball Joint Press Tool" thing was one of my most favorite tools!
(great minds think alike!)

GREEN XJ / YELLOW AXLES..... Gonna have to throw an OSU sticker on the back just for irony sake.....

What Torx didn't mention is that its SHORT Bus Yellow.....
There IS a difference, don't let him tell you otherwise.
:D

Yesterday I took advantage of the sun, and gave the axle a good coat of paint. Let that bake in the sun all day. Then tonight I started on putting everything back together. If you're curious what all goes into it, look back in this thread for the last axle assembly.

Installed the RuffStuff cover after some clean up with the flap disc.
Greased the axle splines and seal surface on the shafts to prevent seal damage.
Installed the axle shafts.
Never-seez'd the unit bearing to knuckle surface.
Torqued the hub to knuckle bolts to 75ft/lbs.
Torqued the hub bolt to tight.

Ready to go under the rig.

Looking at it now, I kinda wish I would have taken some more time to relocate the shock mounts, weld on some limit strap tabs, and some other junk.

Tomorrow I need to pick up oil, and some new brake pads. Then it's just a matter of yarding it under the Jeep. Small chance I might be driving it to work Friday. I hope it starts.

It was flippin hot today.

I was however motivated to finish this project once and for all. Got the axle under the rig, and started bolting everything back together. Surprisingly the axle install went really quick. One of the last projects I had left to do was converting the driver side knuckle to over the knuckle steering. Rod (mojojojo) gave me a flip insert years ago, so I figured I'd put it to use. Drilled out the knuckle to .750".

Welded the insert on.

Only clearance issue with the Currie steering was with the sway bar bracket. Deleted it, and all is well.

Got the new brakes installed. I didn't plan on replacing them, but I got a smoking deal on the rotors, so I figured why not. Basically have a brand new front end now.

For the first time in almost eight weeks the Jeep is back on all fours. As you can tell after NWF this year I was so fed up with it all I did was hose off the Naches mud, and didn't even bother washing it. It'll get a full detail this weekend.

I was half tempted to test drive it, but I didn't want to rush it. Going to replace the power steering pressure hose tomorrow (developed a leak at NWF), double check a few things (track bar adjustment, toe-in), and then cruise for breezies by the river.

CONGRATS DUSTIN!!!!
Enjoy!

now i'm a wishing i built a truss for my 30 last time it was out.
you will love the knuckle flip w/ currie. i had to do some grinding to get it all to clear, but it works great.

Last project I had to do before firing it up was replacing the power steering pressure line. I developed a small leak at the fitting on the stock one during NWF this year. I picked up a replacement line awhile back, and will probably pick up another to carry as a spare. Pressure line breaks are actually pretty common from what I've seen.

Install was straight forward, but a total PITA when working on the box end. I almost considered cutting my 18mm wrench in half to make fitment easier.

After the line was replaced I fired up the Jeep for the first time in eight weeks. I let it get up to temperature, and then set off on the test drive for the new front end. I found no issues other than needing to center the steering wheel. Brakes are strong and firm, steering is tight, and no gear noise. I'm very happy.

So for the past few days I've been commuting in the Jeep (so nice to be driving it again), getting some miles on the axle. One new thing I noticed is how crappy my speakers were compared to what I've been driving. Something had to be done, so I picked up some replacements today.

Went with some basic Pioneer 6.5's. One of the rears was blown, and I found out it had aftermarket Infinity's installed already.

I consider myself stereo-tarded, so when I say install was a breeze I mean it. Almost plug and play.
P1080098.jpg

Also went with 6.5's in the front too. The fronts had Infinity 5.25's installed. These actually were decent, but bigger is better, right? The fronts required some new mounting holes to be drilled, but that's it.

Overall, I'm pleased with the results. It was an easy project, didn't break the bank, and Michael Jackson sounds 10x better now.
