96xj trans in an 89xj

Hello all, I bought an 89 xj with a bad transmission. I had a wrecked 96 with a good transmission. After searching I came across a long thread about what transmission years cross. It sounded like the 96 would work, however, it is not shifting. It shifts manually, the TPS is adjusted correctly on the engine side. Two of the shift solenoids where bad and the pcm was shorted and bad. I used the TCM from my 96 hoping that would work. It didn't. The guy from Dexj did a video using a 94 tcm in an 89 and it worked for him. I then tried a TCM from a 92 and still nothing. Any of you fine educated people have any ideas on my next move?

Based on the "All you need to know AW4" thread, it should be a bolt in application. Did you try the 89 PCM and TCM or were those the ones that were bad? Ive never done a swap but I have a 97 trans that I need to swap into a 92 at some point. Interested to hear what the fix ends up being.

"If you have a 1987-1990 XJ:
  • 1987-1990 AW4s are bolt-in.
  • 1990.5-1996 are bolt-in as long as you swap input gears in your transfer case to a 23 spline, or swap the transfer case as well. Remember that NP231 input gear cuts changed in 94 or 95 and that the rear output of the transfer case changed from 95 to 96 when selecting a donor."
