Seven years ago today, my life changed forever

I saw 7 years ago today and thought it was the day you got married or had your first kid, whatever.

Mod your car however you want, but don't act stupid on public roads. If you do, don't post evidence on line...;)

Oh, and Ron, I enjoyed myself on public roads but I also made sure to keep it on my side of the road.

Also, I'm not gonna watch all 14 minutes of video. I did watch about 30 seconds around 4:00-4:30. You spent pretty close to half of your time on the wrong side of the road. Friends with radios are not a decent safety measure. Stay on your side of the yellow, there's plenty of fun to be had on your side.

If you "enjoyed yourself on public roads" and stayed in your own lane, you must have had your hand in your lap :D

When I was a teenager, we didn't use CBs or blocking vehicles.
And we tended to take up Both lanes a 1/4 mile at a time. We also tended to see if our cars would do the big number on the speedometer. Yes a 70 Dodge Polara 440 will do 140, but it takes more than a mile to do it. A 71 Pontiac Catalina with bad lifters will do 110 on a back country road, but it does not stay in it's lane on extended sweeps. A Fiat 850 Spider will do 100 and a 1200 Honda Civic actually will do 90. When we were not doing that, we were racing in traffic and sometimes suburban streets. Sometimes we would get bored and do neutral drops on country roads. Heck, when I was in my 20's me and some stranger with another hot car played "Leap Frog" over a 15 mile stretch of a busy 2 way county highway.

Not saying that's right, but compared to that, his group of friends blocking the road and using a radio to talk together is down right responsible :D

You'll find many car enthusiasts have the similar stories to tell. It's called "Young and Stupid".

Just to dog pile onto crossing the lines. The road was never 100% secure unless you had someone run it ahead of you to make sure no one was there while someone else blocked it. Like others mentioned you never know if someone was in the middle of your "blocked" off road who had broke down or just stopped for whatever reason.

Also using CB's is not 100%. Who can say someone didn't run your up-road road block and they couldn't get you on the CB to tell you?

I can say this, being on a motorcycle coming around a blind turn and seeing a car in Your lane, is down right scary when it's not fatal. Never cross the yellow unless the road is actually closed off to all traffic by some type of authority, not your buddies.

Is drifting over the line a few feet really going to make your driving experience any better regardless of a "closed" road or not? Is hitting someone head on worth those few feet you went over the line? Don't make the road your course, make the lane your course and stay in it.

Just to clarify your point, right at the end of the clip, you see some cars parked in the pulloff. That is where we started. We drove up the hill about 1/2 mile, turned around, and came back down to where the cars were. The coming back down is what you saw in the video. We cleared the road when we went up, so we knew we were good coming down.

Hindsight is always 20/20. When we did it, with all the circumstances we knew, we felt perfectly safe doing it. Looking back, yes, we shouldn't have done it like that. As I've said, in my other video clips, I never cross the double-yellow once. We felt, at the time, it was a unique situation and felt we had full control of our surroundings. But I can promise you all this, I don't cross double yellows today, and I will not do it ever again in the future.

We're all human, and we all do things that at the time, nothing seems wrong with it. Looking back, better decisions could have been made and we all learn from those experiences. I got the car when I was 19, and am 26 now, and I have definitely matured and learned a lot during the 7 years shown in the video. I am very thankful that my previous mistakes never harmed another person, because I know I did a ton of stupid crap when I was younger.

BTW, to the person asking about an MJ in the video, now I see what you were referring to. In the clip with the 4 vehicles lined up, the two vehicles behind the white XJ belong to a good friend. The black one is a 1991 Chevy S-10 Baja Edition, and the tan one is an 83 S-10 Blazer. Just wanted to give proper credit to his vehicles, because he's only 19 now, and he takes very, very good care of his vehicles and definitely deserves some props for it given his age.

It sounds like you were being as safe as you could and I am sure it wasn't as bad as we are all making it out to be and we have all done our share of stupid things. Having them on video out for the world to see, that is the difference though ha.


Just in general going over the line is just so dangerous mostly for the people around you. I just think when I am out on a spiriting drive/ride, what will I gain by drifting over the line, nothing.

You may not be able to go as fast while staying on your side of the road, but it's every bit as much fun. Unless you're just after the big numbers more than the challenge. Pushing a vehicle to or near its limits without crossing over the yellow is quite the challenge. That's what I enjoy, that's why I wheel. Plus, when your first vehicle is 65 hp 94 Geo Tracker, high speeds don't really happen....

As for the driving vid. Meh, I have seen worse. Heck, as a teenager, I did worse; we all did. If you say you didn't you are either a really low adventure type or are lying to yourself ;)

theres alot of "burn the witch" going on here. i didnt even see anything on the video that bad, crossed a double yellow..... wow..... hardcore...... i drive the ortega's, i get passed by bikes on double yellows in hard turns, yay. big deal. life sucks get a helmet.

You get passed by bikes on double yellows? So they're even bigger idiots since they don't even have a "cage" around them and there's a lot more that can go wrong. And yeah, none of us are perfect, but I also don't go broadcasting my bad decisions to the world expecting people to pat me on the back.

Oh by the way, We all have crossed over the line when in the mountains.If you can see, you'll cut the corner.Hell i see cops doing it all the time.Some folks are smart about it and don't go around showing it off, thats all.
 
I missed this thread, I'm not a fan of cougars but you seem to love the thing so whatever. Like has been said in the thread, Keep it safe out there, enjoy your car and all that.

Ron, ""ricing" is putting a bunch of useless shit on a vehicle. I'm not sure about you guys but everything i've put on my Jeep serves a purpose......except the LED's in the gauges, those are just friggin cool! :D

Now, I'm off to go wheeling!

Come on this was a lecture not an essay and I did use 3 ... and several comas. Math is my best subject any way and besides, three... and three,,, in mathematical terms averages out to 18.3 words per punctuation which is pretty average for novels but a little low on lectures!!! :lecture: Let me know next time that I will be graded on my punctuation and I will be on my best behavior!

Then he ends up under your ride while trying to avoid the on coming car that his buddy just missed. I don't think a cage helped him or the helmet he had on. These are the stories I think that are trying to be expressed here, the past experience that is being shared. No one is trying to stop him, just educate him.
