Rubicon Trail - June 26 - 30, 2010

Great point Santa! I always tell each person to bring two bundles of firewood. Plus last year, every time we stopped along the trail, everybody would pick wood off the ground and toss in into the back of my MJ.

We had a LOT of wood. Which was fine for Rollins, the pyro.:flame: We had quite the campfire going on our last night.

Indian(Johnny) build small fire sit up close, white man(Rollins) build big fire sit way back!.....SANTA

Jumper cables and rod, and a dark lens, is all you need. We've fixed tons of stuff on the trail with that setup. Use a vice-grip to hold the rod and attach the cable to the vice-grip. 6011 rod is your friend in that situation.

I'll go pick up some 6011 rod.

I have at least one pair of jumper cables. Do we need two pairs? I might have another pair in my garage.

I have a set of long ass cables as well. migt have some more layng around. Ill grab what i can. I also have a welding helmet, jacket and gloves.

Oh man, i needed that. Gave me a good chuckle.

I was told you couldnt pick up wood on the trail. is this true?

I haven't heard that.

As far as I know, you can pick up downed wood pretty much anywhere in the National Forest.

Maybe where the trail goes through private property it's restricted?

I've collected tons of wood up there in the past, even asked the local sherrifs and they told us to pick up as much as we wanted, as long as we weren't pulling it off the piles loggers make.

Cool... so it looks like we'll have what we need to weld...

So, does anyone who is coming know how to weld this way? I am learning on a MIG, but never tried this set-up. I woudln't feel confident making critical repairs.

I can weld MIG and TIG but its been a while. I can get a good bead going once i get use to it. IM guessing we would also need some sort of wire brush and a file??? welding with a clean surface works best.

3/32 would probably be best. When welding with (what I imagine to be) a crappy power supply, go slower burn more rods, and get decent penetration.

Will also need a mask of some type, I will probably bring mine.

You moving to Oregon?
Washington
Never did it DCEN, always DCEP....electrode positive. DCEN puts more heat into the electrode, and it's already bad enough with no heat adjustment, and in the non-ideal situations you'd be welding in you want penetration.
Thanks for clearing that up!

Have stick welded before, but with a real machine, never tried it with batteries.

I have never stick welded with a battery or any other kind so I am clueless in this category. Hopefully one of us will have some experience with this. Do we need a seperte battery to run this or just one of our vehicle batteries? I have a spare battery for the Jeep I could bring if needed.

Just use vehicle batteries, everyone has one. Two batteries is sometimes enough, but sometimes 3 are needed if it's pretty heavy duty welding. Just remember to do the positive/negative/positive/negative thing. If you want it to be simple, you can take a couple of short battery cables to be jumpers between the batteries, then you only need one set of jumper cables for the leads. But, two sets of jumper cables also work just fine.

I hope you'll never have to use it. :)

Looks like I will be bringing both my sets of heavy duty jumper cables.

Ok... I'll pick up the 3/32 rod tomorrow.

Also, I justpicked upa trauma kit from Cowboydoc.... another thing I hope we never need to use!

Just trying to get a handle on what i need to bring. Of course i need food, drinks, and shelter, but just trying to get a grasp on the other stuff. Gonna try and get some of those WAG bags, wood, and ???? I dont know much about welding but i can pick up some supplies if someone can chime in on what i need to get...and where.
