I was going to meet Vince at 8:00 am at Home Depot which is at the 210/10 interchange. We would be passing by the 15/138 interchange in the cahon pass at about 8:30. We could meet the rest of you guys at McD's at the 138 interchange then. If 96Jeepspeed doesn't come then we also have the issue of not having the PETT toilet. Someone from the LA side is going to need to come up the 5 to the 99 and into Bakersfield and get it from Goatman. They can then cut due East on the 58 from Bakersfield and take that over to the 395 and meet up with the rest of us. We will be passing by the 58/395 interchange around 9:45. Whoever picks up the PETT can meet us at the 58/395 at 9:45 and we could head up together. We can also move up all these times if we want to leave earlier. Does this sound like a good plan?

In regards to a plan once we arrive; I was thinking we get up and head out first thing Sunday morning and get to Buck Island Lake(not sure that name is right-I'm refering to the Lake with the island that is at the center of the trail where the main camping spot is) and set up camp their. We could then spend all Monday hanging out by the lake doing some fishing, hiking, drinking, hittig local trails, etc. We could then pack up camp Tuesday morning and finish the 2nd half of the trail. I have to head back Tuesday night because my babysitter in only staying through Tuesday and my co-pilot needs to be back as well.

I'm coming up from San Diego and definitely heading up highway 5 to 50 to Icehouse Road. I could detour through Bakersfield if needs be, but I would still take 99 (or 5) to 50. According to Google maps, Bakersfield to Union Valley via 395 is 9 hours. Via 99 or 5/50, it's 6.5 hours. Plus, I know the roads are easier taking the 5 as opposed to the 395 once you get into the mountains. All you have is a short stretch of mountain roads from Cameron Park to Icehouse Road. Taking 395 will involve a lot more mountain driving.

Coming home, 395 may make sense to me, because we'll already be in Tahoe... I'll have to check.

My plan was to leave San Diego around 4:00am-5:00am... hope to be at the campsite by 3pm so there is plenty of sunlight to set up camp, and maybe get a swin in before night.

I think the plan is to hit the trail on Sunday... and try to get to Buck Island.

Whoever comes through Bakersfield will beat you guys up there by going straight up the 99 to the 50. Unless you're already in Victorville, it should be quicker to go 5/99/50.

Unless you just want a prettier drive. If you Mapquest or Google the directions, go to Icehouse Rd and Hwy 50 in Pollack Pines, CA.

Yeah, we always take the 5/99/50 route on the way up and meet at the Icehouse Road turnoff. There is still cellphone coverage at that point. When you get up to Loon Lake, it's a bit iffy. Here are the coordinates for the Icehouse Rd./Highway 50 intersection.

N 38* 46' 09.81"
W 120* 26' 50.91"

Then after we finish up in Tahoe, we take the 395 home.

Looks like Carol and I will be the one coming through Bakersfield. If we leave San Diego between 4 and 5am, that puts un in Bakersfield about 8:30-10am. Will you be around then?

We'll be getting on the 5 at the 210... so we can meet anywhere north of that. Santa Clarita if you know a good place. Only good place I know is the rest stop in Lebec just before you head down the last stretch of mountain. We could meet there or wherever.

I see you have fordyce mapped. Did you wanna head over after the Rubicon? :P

Haha... not this time. If the Rubicon is going to have deep water, I would suspect that Fordyce would be even worse...

If I didn't have to be back by Thursday AM, I would definately go check it out though... I've never seen that trail.

I think you said you have the whole week off... you may want to check out Deer Valley on the way back... it's a fun little trail which isn't too far out of the way if you plan on taking 395 home. It's on the map too.

I sent an email to someone involved with Friends of The Rubicon regarding WAG Bags and spill kits. Her response:

Hello Mike,
You can pick them up at the Loon Lake Kiosk or at the Ellic Creek Count Station.
Thanks, Bebe

So are we at Big Silver Campground next to Union Valley Reservoir? If so, do we take the 50 to Ice House road and then Ice House all the way to the campground?

And I already have two 12 packs so we should be fine.
