My bumper sure came in handy today, I managed to take of quite a bit of paint on the corners from slamming into trees. I'll get better pics of the rear damage in the daylight. And I dragged my roof a few times, but it SHOULD be ok. :dunno:

~Scott

P.S. Post your pics if you took any!

This is real DW not that pansy crap wheels will give you (although I do still have part of a tree in my wheel). I mean full on you can't-control-feel-like-your-going-to-die DW. I havent aligned my new tierod yet...so that's probably it, that or I bent a drive shaft (I have some good scratched on it and the u-joints).

Way to fly off the handle, he just gave you a suggestion of a likely cause. Snow and mud can give you DW as bad as you're describing. Give it a few years, you'll probably experience it at some point. :shhh:

Alright sorry, just doesnt seem as likely to me considering all the other stuff (my recent steering swap and what not, etc.) it could be. It's very possible though!

Yeah you bent your DS, good one. Having one unbalenced tire will give you that 'real DW' you talk of so will not having a trac bar. Although I have driven 30 miles on the freeway (doing 50-70) with no TB and no DW. DW is a strange beast and you would have to have a very bad alignment to get it, you most likely have some worn parts, ball joints, u joints, hubs...

You're correct with your recent stuff and not aligned yet, but even under 'perfect' circumstances, a pound of mud packed around the inside of a wheel can screw stuff up a LOT. My very first experience with DW came from packed in snow and mud from a run up Tinkham in 2000...with a 2" BB and 30" all-terrains. Thing handled fine above 85mph normally, but that crap packed in there violently shot change out of the console at 40mph.

Long story short, don't be so cross with people who are trying to help. ;)

Remember the whole, "my trackbar doesnt work" thing? That's my number one bet. It was about half an inch lower then it used to be on the bracket after wheeling.

~Scott

P.S. It's been a long day and I have a bunch of h/w...sorry for being a d-bag. :)

Well it was a pretty good day overall, we ended up splitting up gradually as the day went on, but Willy and I finished our runs around 5pm...and got some good exploration in. (plus it gave me a good chance to test my hellas and rock light)

I'll have pics up in a bit.

My damage:
-Rear passenger light is broken.
-Whole rear panel (top and bottom) is banged up pretty good.
-death woble (HORRIBLY, I went 30mph about the whole way home and would get it every 5 minutes or less, then on when I was almost home every 30seconds or so at 25mph-ish I'd get it and have to hit the brakes each time to stop or stear.)

Bright side is, my no start problem is no longer. She starts up all on her own now. :)

~Scott
I thought this was a shakedown run!
Check all your steering components, especially TRE's for both track bar and tie rod. Tie rod is really easy to bend shortening it and causing death wobble.

Yeah it was a shakedown run...but I ended up deciding to throttle it more then finesse and risk getting stuck, I don't regret that decision...as everything held up really well IMO. That's what I hope to do tomorrow. I heard my Trackbar binding up a lot today...way more then normally, so I'm guessing there's a relation.

Overall it was a very sick day. Glad to get my rig out and put it to the test finally, and luckly only got my passenger front flare knocked off (easy fix, may need more bumpstopage :D). Also enjoyed watching Rick take his rig for a swim ;).

P.S. Thats a very nice MJ you got there Willy. Is that blue the stock paint? I dont remember that shade being a stock color.

The ground "system" for the XJ is pretty poor and only gets worse with time (Although I doubt this is your total problem, give us some more detail on what it is and is not doing so we can help you out, as Doug said, in the tech forums you will get much more feedback) but should be replaced when given a chance (this goes for anyone else who hasn't already).

The ground goes from the Neg side of the battery to the frame rail, to the engine block and to the firewall. These should all be reaplaced with new grounds (preferably larger) cable. I would also replace the charge wire from the Alt to the battery pos side while I was at it.

Do a search in the tech forums there is lots of info and more detail and even companies that provide pre-made wires. Personally I made my own, but it is up to you.

Michael

I was working on my Jeep today and came to the realization that I completely forgot the ground wire to the Starter :dunce: Add it to the list above!

DW can actually not be created by mud in the tires guys! It can unmask DW that may have not been noticed before due to the extra weight/misbalance of the tires but it is not actually the cause of DW (I know it may seem like a minor difference but it should be noted considering how often this issue arrises). There point is well taken though that a little bit of snow or mud CAN and often DOES unmask DW and make it an issue that you didn't realize you had (you may also just have a really bad wobble with the mud and not realize the difference between DW and wobble, common issue also). It can also be a VERY minor change in alignment like toe!! However, if your TB has moved? That is a VERY good place to start

Sounds like you guys had fun. Was Rick swiming on Sac Up, I assume? That is a bunch of water!!

Indeed. The water liked the inside of his Jeep too :D.

Rick also had this exact little problem reappear today. Quick fix and we were back on our way though.

Looks like you all had fun, sorry I missed it. On the plus side, I did get my mainshaft, chain and sprockets swapped over into my other 242 and the t-case back in the Jeep, but I did not have time for a mini-shakedown run to the vacant lot to see if the 4wd stays engaged. MIL (NO F!) had a b-day gathering for her 80th, had to attend. I was literally trudging through the house from the garage to the shower to the restaurant. It did get me to work today issue-free, so that's a start. I'll see how everything engages today after work.

Hey Lyle, did I see a honey riding shotgun with you? :smootch:

Yes had a similar issue...not as drastic. I had shorter shocks but ran out of time for the install. Great trip!

Personally I don't think this pic does any justice for how deep that hole really was.....

That was alot of water...but after a little floor board perforation I was back in action.
