My "Hero" Blog

yep, go to town drilling it out. I snapped an extractor off in the head of my jeep. its still there. just some extra RTV. in this case, not such a good idea since you are already breaking them left and right. can you drill it out from the other side by any chance and weld a bolt or nut to the other side? ow much meat is left around this thing ? can you jus get a hole saw and cut around the whole thing that way
?

So progress has been. Well.... Nonexistent.

I must have hit a hard spot about 1/4" into the broken bolt because nothing will drill through it. I've dulled countless drill bits and they just won't cut through. Just got back from fastenal with some high quality carbide bits made for cutting through hardened materials. Even those won't put a dent in it.

I don't know what to do at this point. I've heard rumors of using an oxy/acetylene torch and melting the bolt inside of the block and then blowing it out with a shot of oxygen. I have a torch here but don't trust my torching skills to attempt something like that. I can't weld anything to it because it is countersunk into the block. And the block is closed at the back side, so there's no way to get to the bolt from the other side.

Thoughts?

Drill out around the bit? Sawzall the mount off and weld a new one on.

Just hit it with your purse dude

sounds like solid advice!

seriously, buy a set of browndogs & replace your tranny mount, that will end your breakage problems in the future.
you will melt the block long before you melt the bolt or broken extractor.
just run without the one bolt, it is not the end of the world.
also, check to make sure your dowel pins are long enough & the right diameter to fit properly into the bellhousing.

Jon, theres no room around it to drill it out. Its a 3/8 bolt and the current hole I have partially drilled is 15/64".

Tim, good call on the dowels. Ill take a look at those today. Ill also be building my new motor mounts and trans mount today (starting it atleast).

I think this bolt may be more crucial than you think. With the AX-15, there are only 4 bolts actually holding the bellhousing to the engine block, two of which are only 3/8" bolts. The remaining bellhousing bolts simply hold the little aluminum spacer/shield in place. Id like to keep all 4 if at all possible.. especially since I've managed to shear both grade 8 upper bolts already.

Thanks for the help and pointers guys. Im gonna give it one last hoorah today to see if I can get that last bolt out.

Should you go from grade 8 to grade 5? Grade 8 might shear where 5 will bend ?

a better option still is to order some studs from arp.

btw: i only had six 3/8 bolts holding my lenco bellhousing to the back of my 1400+ hp blown alcohol hemi & never sheared a bolt.

I was actually thinking of going the other way with this. Considering running F-911 bolts rather than the grade 8. ARP's are another good option. Gonna check out the dowels right now

Can you post a pic of the situation too? Like what if you welded a stud in there the best you could?

Here's a crappy shot of it.

So I did some research and it turns out that masonry bits tend to do well when drilling hardened materials. So I picked up a bit from Home Depot, and sure enough, it's drilling through!

Now to see how far I can drill and then I'm hoping I can get it out with an easy out or something. Maybe a LH threaded tap if I can find one?

I'm surprised a masonry bit works. wow. who would have thought.

wow, thats news to me and Ive worked at Home Depot and Lowes since the end of 08.

is it back together yet or did you finally burn it down and collect insurance?

Hahahah nope not even close to being back together yet. Actually, no progress at all.. Haven't even finished drilling it out.

I've been plagued with back problems for the past few years, and its sure as hell acting up right now. Probably wouldn't even be able to crawl under the jeep right now, let alone man a drill under there. Gonna take it easy/lay low for a few more days and focus on school and hopefully pretty soon ill be back under there.
