My "Hero" Blog

Thanks again for the words of advice guys, I appreciate it.

I ordered a new cap, rotor, plugs, and wires for the beast. Shipped out today. Im hoping they'll fix my stinkin misfire problem.

New 4wd actuator is also in the mail for the S10. Gotta install that, buff the paint, fix a slight miss at idle, and then sell it pronto for jeep monies.

New D44 ball joints are sitting in the garage looking all pretty up on the shelf. I need to make a trip out to Jon's sometime soon and press those bad boys into my knuckles. Then maybe I'll reassemble it, throw the high steer arms on and start making a tie rod for it.

I installed the exact ball joints on my -30 late last year. Simple install with the rented autozone press. Good joints for $93 bucks (Amazon). My kit was missing one zerk plug for the lower ball joint. I guess I'll fix that one of these days...

I rented that press from AZ to get the ball joints out and it was an epic failure. I don't have any power tools up here at school with me, and using a 1/2" ratchet with the knuckle in a vise was quite the challenge. Maybe installing them with one will be easier than taking out the old rusted ones...

Kelly, how are the joints holding up for you so far? I know it's only been a few months (I'm assuming), but I'm still curious.

Kevin I have a press and ball joint tool you are most welcome to come by and use if you are around Dublin anytime. I also a have the pre load socket for the upper ball joint, basically everything you would need to install the BJ's I have.

The knuckles are very good after 6 months. I have three big wheeling trips planned in the next few months and will let you know if i have problems. With the many upgrades i have made in the past 6 months, the jeep drives great. My old ball joints were worn so these were needed.

Welp, the jeeps broken again. Looks like I sheared a few bellhousing bolts. Time to drop the bellhousing yet again so I can get the broken bits out of the engine block. 4th times a charm, eh?

the hell is up with you and transmissions. so no dyce last weekend?

I wish I knew haha. Building new motor and trans mounts before it moves again.

Still went to Fordyce this weekend, but rode up with some buddies (Seal and Sam). Stopped at the first crossing and camped there. Fantastic trail. Cant wait to get my jeep out there

dude, just buy a set of browndogs & instantly solve your problems.
Tis the plan. Except I'm just gonna build my own copying brown dogs design. Just picked up the bushings for it. Hoping to have them done this week

so whats your tranny mount like ? input shaft too deep or something like that? just stock motor mounts right now right ?

frame stiffeners and front stiffeners?

Tranny mount is newish. I replaced it when I first replaced the bellhousing. Stock motor mounts that seem fine. Replacing them with my own anyways though.

Only main rail stiffys.

Did you buy that bike from a guy named Sam?

I can't remember the guys name off the top of my head. It was an Asian dude who worked at some body shop as an estimator.

Dropped the trans last night. Might try to EZ-out the broken studs late tonight after class.

I got the passenger side bolt out the other day. I broke a bolt extractor inside it and was lucky enough to be able to grab onto the bit and a chunk of the broken bolt and backed it out with a pair of pliers.

The drivers side? Not as lucky. Broke ANOTHER bolt extractor inside of it, and it left nothing to grab on to. This bolt seems to be much harder to break loose than the other side. I tried drilling it out and am having a hard time drilling through the hardened extractor. I thought about welding a nut to the bolt, but the bolt broke off too far into the block for me to be able to weld anything to it.

Any ideas? At this point i guess ill just stock up on drill bits and go to town on it until i drill through. Probably gonna put some heat to it as well. This sucks.

Never use bolt extractors... I've broken more of those than drill bits. I just had this happen this happen at work on a boiler. I was tapping a hole after drilling the broken bolt out and snapped the tap. I'd say the tap and extractors have similar characteristics. I just got a punch in there and wailed on it with a BFH till it cracked then picked it out in pieces. You might need to go oversize with a high quality drill bit made for drilling out harder metals.

Edit:

I had the luxury of the tap not being a solid piece, as it has channels on its sides. Is it possible to catch an edge of the extractor or bolt in the hole with a chisel/punch and try to knock it counterclockwise? I've gotten lucky doing that a couple times. Or if there is enough bolt material showing, center punch some small holes to be drilled around the extractor then drill it out, might be loose enough after that to get it out.
