Well that weekend is out for me, I have to go to Wakarusa for a wedding (at least this time I'm not the best man) and I have the GF back now so she and I are spending the weekend there at some cheap motel (gulp....hope that doesn't lead to wedding bells for me...). If someone from this area is going down that way you could borrow my hoist and engine stand. I should be done with them by Friday. My hoist will handle the height and weight of the ole 4.0 complete and I have a leveler as well which helps in the install process to get things lined up. Or you could come pick it up, it comes apart easily.

Wakarusa is in my old neck of the hood. I grew up in Bremen which isn't too far from there. Tell your GF that it's really tacky to get engaged at someone else's wedding, that should gain you a week at least!
I have a hoist and stand as well that I can bring, but I'm thinking I'd have to tear it down to fit it in the back of the Tahoe. If someone could grab yours I'd be happy to let them.
bmyohn, I'd say just pick the weekend that works best for you and then see how many people are in. Is the Jeep your DD, or can you afford to have this take longer than a weekend if you have to? I'm hoping I can make it down and get some experience at this particular swap since I want to do a stroker build here in the next year or so :eyes:

Ah, my friend wife who's daughter is getting married is from Bremen (Naragane or something close to that effect but now Hoke). They lived across from the State Police Post.
Don't worry, no engagement at a tacky motel.....but other things could occur there and 9 months later.....
Anywho ya, if someone wants to pick this stuff up to use on this switch let me know and we'll work out the details. My hoist both folds up or can be torn down.

i still havent gotten ahold of the guy yet. so im still not sure yet. i think im gonna grab a cheapie engine stand to do some work on the engine with. a friend of mine is gonna use the stand afterwards. or i could just make it a 
stand and we can pass it around the group for whoever needs to use it.

The I-6 is a heavy engine, I'd suggest something with more than a single front wheel, a four wheel is easier to move around, the singles can tip easier.

^^ What he said. You'll want a four-wheel stand. Not only is the 4.0L I6 heavy, it's long which puts even more strain on the stand due to the leverage. Engine stands are not engine specific. They generally have four adjustable arms that you put your bolts through (grade 8 please!) and thread them into the rear bolt holes on the block (where the bell housing would attach). I got some longer bolts (2-3" long) and a bag of washers and used 6-8 washers (enough to make sure the bolt almost bottoms out in the block, but is still taut against the engine stand. Harbor Freight had stands pretty cheap, $30-40. Held my 350 fine which weighs about as much as the 4.0L (though not as long). Make your friend go halfsies and it's a good deal for all involved.

I've been debating between this weekend's Badlands trip or the one next weekend. What's the turnout looking like for this weekend?
Even if I don't bring the XJ out, I live close enough to Attica (~30minutes) that I could load up my hoist and run it out to you. When are you planning on being there?

Try renting one at Hertz, RSC, Bledsoes, any of thoughs. They are only a couple hundred and you can always recoup most of that on craigslist when they are done.

Good news about the hoist!
I replaced my exhaust manifold a while back on my 4.0L. It was a little tricky to get to some of the bolts, but not bad with a few wobble extensions. I would say leave the header off so you have more clearance to get the engine in there, but if someone else has real experience they should chime in...
Wheeling this weekend is sounding pretty fun, I might just grab the trailer Saturday morning and head out there to meet you guys.

well some not so good news today. first off i had the engine mounted on the engine stand and i went to spin it around to work on the oil pump and the bolts ON the engine stand (not attached to the motor) snapped right off. luckily no damage to the motor. THEN secondly after i got the motor back up right i went to work on the valve cover and mounting that, i was tightening the bolt on the front pass. corner and the valve cover cracked (hairline crack) so im hoping that they will send me a new one.

dammit man! You need to put some padding under that thing. Were they grade 8 bolts?

the bolts that failed werent grade 8 bolts. probably grade 5. i think im gonna replace all the bolts with grade 8 and try it again. with padding!
