Sourcing a used AW4 transmission for my XJ

'96 XJ here. I find myself in the unenviable position of trying to locate another good AW4 transmission, because my fluid just leaked out and mine's nothing but a core charge now.

How do you go about finding a used one of these in acceptable condition?

The only mechanic in town I trust took 2.5 weeks to source one with '119k' miles on it and the bell housing was cracked when it finally got there, which means it was in a wreck. He gave it a good look over without breaking it open and says everything looks ok, but he still doesn't trust it and is asking me if I want to personally try to find another one instead, and I don't know the first place to look, or how to make sure it's in decent shape.

So I'm all ears on that.

My first lead is my buddy who has access to a big junk yard back in the hills. He's asking what other model vehicles the AW4 transmission came on and he can start looking.

What Jeep years and models was my transmission in...and/or other makes of vehicles?

Although I haven't rebuilt a transmission before, I could possibly go that route if it wouldn't take that long for someone with my skill level. Hopefully a video is out there to help. I've done all my own car work for the last 30 years, although nothing deep in a motor or transmission, but about everything else. My junk yard buddy is willing to help and he's got more motor skills than I do.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the link and offer 75SV1. I'd def appreciate it if you could ask your guy if he can source one.

lawsoncl, thanks big for the link. That answers a lot of questions for me.

I asked. Also, PMed you on one in Winchester KY. Of the 3-4 I've dropped the pan, the one with the least miles 130K had the most junk in the pan. The one from my '00 XJ was fairly clean at 200K. I should have kept it, instead of the one I had rebuild for one of my '98 XJs.

Okeydok I found a 97 transmission close by that's in good shape that'll bolt right into my 96 with a simple electrical splicing, as confirmed by the 'everything you ever wanted to know' document linked above.

Anyone know of how this splice is done or seen a write up on it?

You'll want to swap the NSS over if the connector is different. If the the solenoid connector under the hood against the passenger firewall doesn't mate up, you'll need to cut the end off and splice the connector from the old trans. The 96 might be the same, as 96 tended to be a mix of 95 and 97 parts. I don't have the wire colors at the moment, but I recall they were very similar between my 89 and 98 - like white with black stripe versus black with a white stripe.
