alright, so after my vibes are mostly gone im finally ready to save up for some 4.88s and go back to 33's.(i had already saved most of it then dumped it all into the vibe siutation) i was starting to think though that instead of doing the dana 30 lockright and leaving the rear open with 33's and 4.56s what about leaving both diffs open and running around on 35's??? i was thinking 35's and 4.88s would be alot better than my 31's and 3.55's, and probably better than 33's and 4.56s. and i wouldnt have to worry about breaking the dana 30 anytime soon with it open.
i know of course ill want lockers but i was thinking of waiting til i have the cash for a limited slip/selectable up front and a selectable out back and of course alloy shafts all around and some trusses. im on 3.5" lift and alotta trimming and i dont mind trimming more if its possible and i was gonna throw some comanche shackles in the rear to help out a bit...what are the steering issues with 35's? steering braces are a must id imagine. anyway i was wondering if i could could roll by someones place one of these days and maybe mock up someones spare 35 to see if its even reasonable, i know the previous owner did run 35's but he was an idiot and also had coolant in the windsheild wiper res. among other quirks i found. or

i just realized id have to ditch my confer rack though, the jeep barely fits in the garage with the 31's and almost scraped on 33's. ill prob just make a low profile rack of some kind and sell the confer and the lockright and the dana 30 cad posi lok.

33's and 4:56's and lock the rear FIRST. Then get out and drive it.

BC and Jes are perfect examples of how many trails you can do on 33's.

I think doing gears before lockers is a waste of money. Just do it right the first time, full carrier lockers and 4.88 gears. And do yourself a favor, stick with 33's for a while and learn how to drive first. Seat time is way more important than low gear ratios, lockers, and big tires.

The man speaks the truth.

hells ya! thanks for all the quick input. after doing some wheeling with the jeep fully loaded and 3 peeps inside and a full roof rack i was thinking 33's again and deeper gears are a must. the more i think about 35's the more i think ill need to reupgrade steering and then address the stock brakes, etc but with the 33's it was reasonable. i think ill wait for a rear full carrier locker as well...and maybe keep the lockright up front. what rpms are you getting with 4.88's and 33's on the freeway at like 70mph? maybe i should go with 4.56's???i like to 65-70 but not much faster, itd be nice to have overdrive back too, but id be happy at 60mph.

i've got 4.56's and 33's and i couldn't be happier. i go through more than alot of the guys i know with 35's-37's. its all about how you drive. plus the 33's and 4.56's give you a tone more bottom end torque to play with on the trail. the other day i just butted my front end up to a real steep hill and tapped the gas and instanly was looking at the sky. it was so steep that my hitch was digging in the ground!! i though about going to 35's but then realized that there probably isn't alot more i could do with 35's that i can't do with 33's. and i love the extra power!!

alright, i think ill be doing 4.56's and 33's as soon as i can. im just keeping my eyes peeled for some reasonably priced 33's. i was thinking bfg a/ts cuz theyre cheap and always on craigslist for under 300 for a set.

esp. if you have 16" wheels... these full size truck guys are always swapping out their 285's and 305's for 315's and such... sometimes the deals are worth buyin 16" cragers for $200/all 4

I ran 4.88's and 33's for a few years with a manual trans and it wasn't a big deal at all. I think I was turning 3K rpm at 70-75 mph. I wouldn't worry too much about running 3K rpm for extended periods of time, never hurt my engine. I would say go for 4.88s. Reason being, if you ever plan on going to 35's, you will want the lower gears.

im set on 33's. and im having a hard time deciding between 4.56's and 4.88's. im leaning towards 4.88s, but is the 3k true at about 70mph with the auto ? i just dont want to be at 4-5k at 70 with the 33's thats all.
im also planning on swapping in the lockrite up front at the same time im also planning on a c-rok brace, and a rustys style steering brace along with some adj tubed uca's. and chromoly shafts with a cad block off kit and new oil seal on pass side hopefully as well if i can afford it. anyone know of a better price on alloys than 459$ shipped ?

You will be fine with 4.88s and an auto with 33's. I was running that before I swapped in the manual trans in my junk. Get yourself a quality set of 4.88 gears, I prefer Precision Gears myself, and go have fun.

cool. thanks bryan . and uh, if anyone on here can do gears id gladly pay you instead but im thinking west coast differenitals out here in sac. anyone know of any place better? or same work but cheaper

im willing to drive around too, it doesnt just have to be out here....
