Ok so the other places i wanted to put this isnt working so im putting it here.
Im writing a paper on 4 wheeling and Closure of four wheel drive trails. I wanted to put some views from people who accually go out and get dirty instead of just facts.
My question and request to everyone is to tell me what you think 4 wheeling is and what it means to you.
Thanks
John

Testing my mechanical abilities and getting a sense of satisfaction. Going places that not many people go, doing things not many people do. Being adventurous and exploring. Helping people who are stuck whether its a truck stuck in a bog or someone stuck on the side of the road.

well I can sum it up in to one word "Fun"
every time I go wheeling even for just a hour or two I get to be free and remember all the good times I had with my father camping and fishing and yes wheeling. It has been a part of who I am since my birth as some of my baby pics are from trails and dunes and camp outs my parents went to and I hope to some day pass that down to my kids and if not mine to my friends kids (since many are having kids this year)

A day with the family. I love wheeling and going places I never been before. It's family time when I wheel. I take the kids and girl and we fill up and go make a day of it. We site see, try new places to eat, and at times we stay out and find a camping site to pitch our tent and go swimming. Wheeling is a great way to get outside and spend time with the family. And well relatively cheap really. Thats why I think it sucks they want to shut down trails, saying it's no good and all that BS. They talk about boosting economy, that's what 4 wheelers do when they go out riding. We buy parts, gas, food, stay in hotels, state parks, buy ORV stickers and state park stickers. 4 wheelers rock and they need to recognize!!

If Im with a group its the comradery of facing an obstacle, whether it be the weather, the terrain or breakage and overcoming it. Sometimes I go by myself (eeek). Thats mostly to get away from civilization and just wonder through the woods. I like being self sufficient so a reliable and capable 4X4 vehicle is part of that. Sometimes the need to get off road is to somehow celibrate that self reliance.
As many here know, the Mid Atlantic region is not the best area as far as rock crawling, sure there are a couple places, but they require some travel and sometimes fees. I hate to say it but Ive all but quit off roading simply because I think casual off roading is a dieing sport in this region(dont shoot the messenger). More and more trails are being closed, land is too valuable to justify ORV parks and it seems every year the states get more strict with vehicle inspections and requirements and the price of gas is not going down any time soon. Ive been off roading in the area for a little over ten years. Sadly, what it represents to me now is a very fun time in my present and past but not so much in my future.

Having trails open, to me is an opportunity to spend quality time with my young children and expose them to some of the most beautiful places on earth. It is an opportunity for my son to look out the window instead of at the screen of his video game. They get to explore and chase lizards, see Indian ruins and pictographs. Trail days are what makes up allot of my best memories with my family.

Off-Roading to me means a number of different things depending on the location and frame of mind.

I like:
* being outdoors and the peace of mind it affords me.
* the comradery of wheeling with friends.
* the amount of outdoors you can see from a Jeep. I have seen more wildlife from the front seat of my Jeep than on foot (Which shows you how quiet I am on foot! ;) )
* the challenge of taking on an obstical and getting though it in one piece.
* the technical challenge of building it yourself and driving it afterwards.
