Weekend is over...what did you get done?

That happens pretty frequently, crummy design and shoddy welding.

Check your firewall for cracking around the MC as well. Probably won't be an issue on an 88 but was pretty common on 84-86 XJs and 86 MJs.
 
Spent the better part of yesterday cussing and ranting and raving while installing a new heater core in Wendy's ZJ. Now don't get me wrong, I love Jeep brand vehicles and in most cases the older the better for simplicity's sake. The parts seem to last and last which is great, but I swear to Christ the engineers don't take into consideration the end user any more. Most things on this car are fairly simple, but some things......well let's just say they're way more complicated than they needed to be.

I just have to ponder the obvious here; If the manufacturer can trust a double flare fitting to hold the huge hydraulic pressures in a braking system or on A/C lines, would it be so much to ask to use that same style fitting on a heater core or A/C evaporator INSIDE THE FIREWALL to allow a person to easily R&R the danged things without having to disassemble (what feels like) the entire vehicle??? I don't know how it is on the 4.0 models, but on the V8's the engine bay is as cramped as you could imagine it would be and most of the HVAC box nuts are in the engine bay hidden by all sorts of useless things like that pesky engine (who needs THAT, right?), and by the time I had the dash removed I was no longer in the mood to play f@@k around with it. The heater core now has a joint behind the dash where one should've been designed to be in the first place and the job was finished in less than half the time. Well, save for the fact that I had the dash about 90% reassembled only to realize I left one piece of trim off from around the instrument cluster....that needed to go on before everything else around it lol. By this point I was tired, but elated that the job was nearly done and was leak-free. I shut the door and went inside. I'll finish it today. Jeez....I'm getting too old for this crap :)

pulled a tcase from work got it home and the bad one pulled from they wifes jeep. installed the jy one and all was right in the world. tore to old one apart.....wow carnage.

in other news found a dana 300 that im toying with the idea of putting in my jeep
 
I havent done much. Cleaned the house and garage for my parents and to prep for the cage install next week. Ordered two random little parts and am waiting to see if Ruffstuff will have a 15% off sale for Memorial day or if i should just go ahead and use the 10% NAXJA discount for some steering. After the cage and steering there really isnt much else on my list for now other than the chop top. Gotta figure out how to go about that one with my family... My parents could care less but my grandpa will have a cow. Lol.

You get that idea from Nate? I told him about that... I have one in my 98 that I just swapped to manual :D

2.5 and 3.9 Dakotas from the mid 90s till 98 or 99 use an AX15, later ones use an NV3550.

The only differences from the XJ unit are the shifter tower (it's a bit taller to accept the longer shift lever), the shift lever, and the bellhousing.

The tailhousings are clocked the same too. The YJ/TJ ones are clocked differently iirc. YJs/TJs use the same shift tower as a Dakota, but a different lever arm to accomodate the different seating.

AX15 legos are fun to play with.

I spent all afternoon hooning mine around the local twisty roads... did probably 150 miles with it. I'm not sure if my favorite feature of the Dakota shifter is that it is better located by the wheel for asshole driving, or that it unscrews, instead of having that stupid square-peg thing, so it's easy to get the various shift boots on and off.

I did get the idea from nate :D apparently im third in the ax15 nerd phone tree
 
Took me way longer then it should have but I got the new transmission bolted into the trail Jeep. In the process I twisted a bolt off in my D44 pinion yoke so now I need a new one of those. To hell with trying to drill that nonsense out.

Still have a LONG list of crap to do. Next up will be to re-work the rear suspension.
 
Hung with GF Friday. Went to Charlotte Saturday and bought some vintage Polk Audio Speakers to complete my surround sound project at the house. Meet up with Tim and had lunch with him and some beer! Hit up a couple Goodwill's and found some CD's for $1.00! I also hit up The Last Word, and bout 3 albums to add to the collection! Final stop was Lunchbox Records for some more old vinyl! Then I came home and Watched my son sing with the community chorus and an orchestra. That was pretty amazing! Had dinner with an old friend I had not seen in 8 or 9 years and my GF. Sunday I finished building flats for the school play and started to modify some door hinges to hold them all together! Damn I had a busy weekend! But it was all pretty much fun!
 
I went to an upholstery shop and got quoted $50 for a 4x3 top with industrial Velcro for when I do my sunroof mod when cage is done-ish. My tonneau cover uses Velcro at a 30* angle to help keep it waterproof. Anyone have an idea as what to do with the roof to make it as watertight as possible? Not counting on it, but it would be nice.

The biggest issue I see would be the front leaking, I would say use weatherstripping on the inside edge of the part that comes off and make it as flush as possible to what it hooks to, I know that's about as clear as mud lol

Got it welded and they did reinforce, ran a bead all the way around instead of just the partial stock weld. It was definitely bent before my clutch feels better than it ever has, engagement is early instead of pushing it almost to the floor.
