You should be able to open it by pulling the plastic trim and screwing around with the linkages. I've had to do that before on my 98.
Haha, If it was a 96- the hatch would already be open!now is just a matter of finding a hatch then getting the damn thing open so I can put the new one on.

Sorry to hear about the hatch. You do know about the "D" position for the transmission, right?
Is that teal or am I seeing things. I've only seen one 97+ that color and my buddy(GoSlowGetStuck) bought it. His is a rust free cali Jeep though.
I think by 1997 people were, mostly, over the whole teal car craze of the early to mid 90's.
