Weekend is over...what did you get done?

I put in balance beads tonight. I used about 7 oz in each tire. I took a quick 2 mile drive at 70 mph and it feels better. We'll see over time.

I'm sitting here psyching myself up for another round of "let's pull the transmission outta the ZJ again" Needless to say I'm REALLY longing for those days that I worked on something not because I HAD to, but because I wanted to upgrade or improve things because the end result would be to have more fun on the trails! Hopefully this will be the last of this saga :bawl:

Got the transmission pulled from the ZJ yesterday morning. It wasn't nearly as bad as the first time. I remembered all the trouble spots this time and it went like butter....except for the time that I nearly knocked myself out from hitting my head on the lift arm. OUCH! Then I finally fixed the two leaking tires and bent rim that I left Gulches with a while back. Sold the MJ today, then pulled a VW Thing engine to hopefully sell this coming Friday.

Things are finally looking up for us!

Great to hear Mike.

I pulled my Jeep's engine this afternoon. Going to start a rebuild this week. Just need to sell a bunch of parts...

Going for basic rebuild?

I spent two days piecing my z71 4l60e back together. This time with z-Pack 3-4 clutch pack, new seals throughout, transgo shift kit, and corvette servo. Excited to get this thing back on the road so I can park the XJ for a while.

Flew to California this morning and worked today. Looking forward to taking Friday off for a three day weekend as repayment.

Fingers are crossed to just do a re ring kit, but it could turn into something more.

If you give a mouse a re-ring hes going to want pistons, if he gets pistons hell want an overbore, if he does the overbore he wants to go ahead and do a 4.2 crank and rods, if you give him the new rotating assembly hes going to want a cam, and before you know it its a stroker and your wallet is 3k lighter

That's about the cost of a 5.3 swap nowadays.

This ^. Stop tempting me guys, I'm poor.

What were your compression readings? How many miles are on the engine?

I rented a compression tester from O Reilly's when I did them in March or so. I don't know if the gauge was faulty or not, but they were LOW.

I bet most of the smoke screen is from leaking valve stem seals. Make sure you have the hear reworked while it's off.

After the terrible numbers I got from all the cylinders (they were all just about the same, and all really low), I did a wet compression test. Those numbers were about 20-30 higher, IIRC. I'll post pics of the piston heads in a second, I have never seen anything like this before. I got the top ring off the number 6 cylinder tonight and put it back in the cylinder. With my feeler gauges the gap was about .0060 and I believe it is supposed to be .020, IIRC again. I also don't remember if that is the right number of 0's, but my brain is tired.

That's the same direction I was headed. Just wanted to be sure he checked the compression and did a leakdown test. New valve seals have cured two of my 4.0's smokescreen issues.

While I am sure I will need to do the valve seals, I'm pretty confident this was the main issue. I will be doing valve seals and possibly main bearings, too.

Good news, synthetic oil really cleaned my engine up. 0 sludge anywhere, oil screen looked clean, and the head looked really good. I do have a broken bolt in the rear exhaust hole of the head I need to remove, and I broke the temp sender in the back of the head. I'll attach pics from my phone in just a second.

Doug, I am going to PM you.

Look at the scarring on the on top of the piston. I am guessing it is the ceramic from an old plug, but I don't know. I have never been in a car/ big engine, just lawnmowers and race go carts.

1&2 are perfect, the rest have a little, and 6 is the worst. I haven't cleaned 3 yet, that's why it is dirty.
