Toter home build

looks good man. just gotta ask though, what's with all the leftover space on the front of the cabinet? is there stuff behind there, ran out of drawers, or plan on adding a few drawers down the road?

Under the stove is where I will eventuallybe mounting a water heater and it mounts from the outside and does not leave enough space inside for anything else I did add another small babinet door next to the furnace to the left side, I still need to see if I have 2 more small drawers I can fit next to the ones that are already there. The space just below the counter edge is where I will be mounting my heater vents at each end, one under the sink and the other next to the oven. The space above and below the Ice box was left that way so if I do find a 2 or 3 way fridge and it is taller than what I have in there now, I will have room to fit it by just cutting the opening up larger.

I decided to go ahead and start getting my ceiling framing done so that I can go ahead and start building the overhead cabinet area for the kitchen. I already figured out how I want to do it but am gonna have to run and pick up a couple things first, went out there and it is already burning up in there, not sure if I will get much done on it or not, just depends on how much heat I can stand at this point.

well, got a little done, framed up ny ceiling in the driveway and then got my son and a friend of his help me get it in place

I will be framing the loft sections closer to the roof to allow more head room in the bed areas, the main floor ceiling height ended up at 6' 8" which is just right for my wife to be able to reach lights and the roof top AC controls

Don't forget to make plenty of "hidden" compartments for your guns and what not.

nope, no plans to do that, if I ever go to Alaska it will be by plane so I will have enough time to enjoy some flyfishing.

Richard,

What is your anticipated cost to build this?

I've got about 3 grand in mine as it rolls down the road.

He'll have more in materials, mine is very spartan on the inside, but I built it that way so I could still use it as a box truck.

it's cheap. Cheaper than I could have bought a truck and a trailer, I never have to worry about overloading it, and we can put one in the back and trailer/flat tow another.
It's not very fast, but it's reasonably economical for what it is, and it's stone simple and reliable.
Two things I value very much in my tow rig.

Trying to stay under $5300 total which includes what I paid for the truck. So far I have managed to stay way under budget for it so I think it is totally posible to do

Here is what I managed to get done yesterday, I still need to mount the drawes track rails to the wall to keep them in their proper position and finish some stuff on the fridge section and then I can get it painted also

Thanks, I am trying to get the whole Kitchen section done within the following week. Next will be building boxes for in front of the wheel wells so I can figure out the rear bed loft and wall. It is a slow process because I try to do what I can in the mornings before it gets too hot and then I go to work in the early afternoons. Bit by bit I will get it done eventually

sweet!
white looks loads better!
i see you moved the drawer too, looks a little better.

That explains so much, I could not figure out for the life of me why anyone would want one of these slow, uneconomical, ugly beasts. I always figured a truck and trailer was so much easier to store, the truck can be used for multiple purposes, my dodge gets more than double the mileage while towing a jeep, etc., etc.

But...that is pretty damn cheap. If my math is right, I didn't come out ahead with a truck, camper, and trailer until I logged about 18,000 miles of towing.

That doesn't take into consideration of using your normal truck as a daily driver if you Jeep isn't DD capable and I don't think you would want to drive around the Toter Home.

I'm not trying to take away at all from doing this. I think it is pretty cool and I have been looking into buying one of these trucks and doing a conversion myself once I have room to do it.

Some of us have several vehicles to chose from if one, two, or three are broken down. :firedevil

A few things.

I hate trailers
I didn't already own a pickup truck.
It is a single use vehicle for me, and is cheap enough to be so.
I get better mileage than you think, It get's 8.5 rolling down the road at 70MPH. That creeps up to 10 if you keep your foot out of it. I plan pon picking up some mileage when I delete the 12ft tall box. The goal is 10 @ 70 and 12 @ 60.

Also, You've not known convenience with a truck until you've owned a box truck with a 24" deck height. Lawnmowers? Roll them into the back. Heavy generators? Roll them right up my 30" wide ramp.

It's moved at least 4 people.
I took it to the Home depot and loaded all the materials I needed to build it in the back in one trip. Because it's got an MDT front axle it turns and parks no worse than a one ton. I've fit it into some places that you wouldn't belive, my driveway being one of them. Needless to say I will never own a light duty pickup truck. When this one dies I'll buy another MDT chassis.

There are 4 vehicles in my driveway, and a uhaul stored in a barn...

I'm not saying a 30+ft long MDT is for everyone, but it made good sense fiscally for me, and now that I've owned an MDT truck, I wouldn't own a light duty chassis.
The brakes on my uhaul stopped us so quickly in a panic situation on the way back from Harlan I bounced a daschund off the dashboard, that was 17K lbs gross. It wasn't sketchy and there was way more brake left.
