It has a tube behind the patch...should be okay to get me home form a local spot but I will get a new one before my next long trip...

yea, you either slipped or broke a steel belt. it may be ok as a spare for a short low speed trip, but i wouldn't recommend using that tire. basically, the belt helps support the weight on the sidewall, and if it is broken, it will not take long for the tire to literally blow. from what i've seen working on cars, i would highly recommend trashing the tire.
