Tie rod end identification

Hey everyone, long time follower. First time poster! I need new tie rod ends, both sides are the same. I know they are offset but I am having trouble figuring out which ones I need to order. Mine are bad. Any help would be appreciated. I am capable of replacing them myself, I just need help with I.D.

Those look like GM 1 ton offset tie rod ends. Could be EX23434L and EX23434R. Look up those part numbers and see it that's what you got.

It looks like you have a WJ knuckle swap on your XJ. Typically people will use the GM tie rod ends on the new steering linkage. It look like a similar set up on my 99XJ. I did the same knuckle swap and those offset TRE's look like what I used. I can't be 100% sure from the pictures, but I think those are them.

I used a GM set from Ruff Stuff about 10 years back. The covers are still good. I used a set from a vendor off of EBay. They started cracking with in a year or two. So, get GMs. And the 1-Ton GM cross over steering is so nice. I use a steering stabilizer on mine. Yet, there isn't really a need to. I have run without one just fine.

Just replaced it, it works great. Just need to replace my drag link ends now. The drag link end that attaches to the knuckle, that's just a normal tie rod end right? And I only need a pitman arm end for the other side, right?

They should be the same 1 ton TRE's. But depending on your lift and amount of travel, they do have high angle TRE's on the drag link.

I can't tell what those TRE's in the picture are, but they look like regular GM 1 ton TRE's.

Everything is the same about these but the threads! The new one seems to have a slightly different thread pitch and count. The new ones are from barnes4wd. I don't know where else to look or get a different type.

You're going to have to get some calipers(or use a tape measure) and a thread pitch gauge and measure the thread pitch and the diameter of the threads.

Once you know that information, then you can look up what ball joints are available with that diameter and thread pitch.

The ones that I used are a 7/8"-14. That means the diameter is 7/8', and the thread pitch is 14 threads per inch.

Measure what you've got on the Jeep, and then look for corresponding TRE's.

These ones from Trail Forged are 7/8"-18. So maybe that what you need. They come in different thread pitches. Remember too, that there will be a right hand and left hand thread on the TRE's. You need one right, and one left hand thread TRE's in order to properly set the toe in. Make sure you have one of each and they are in the right orientation.

Thank you so much, I went to auto parts stores around me. The pitch was 1.50, they didn't have proper gauges. Had to use a thread restore tool. Used that to figure out the thread pitch, the thread restore tool at 16 fit on the threads but 18 didn't seat correctly. I am struggling to get this right.

I don't have a tool to measure the threads but I used a app. It says it's 16 threads per inch.

Maybe those aren't GM 1 ton TRE's after all. I can only find 14 and 18 TPI TRE's for GM 1 ton.

Might have to measure the taper on the TRE's and see what it is. Or search for some TRE's that are 16 TPI, and see what comes up.

If you have one of the GM TRE's, compare the taper to those and the one you have on the Jeep. That may give you an indication of the size you need.

yes, they are 7/8" diameter.

I can't find a 7/8-16 TRE. There are 3/4-16 TRE's.

Maybe it's metric, or something else is going on.

i don't know what is going on either, the only difference is the threads, everything is the same. The thread pitch is 1.50, i believe it is metric. I can only find 14 and 18 also. The diameter of the bolt for the ball joint on the original one is 1/2 inch though, while the standard size has a 3/4" one. I am looking up metric ones now.

I might have found the right ones, i believe they are from Rusty's offroad. they seem to offer metric, 22mm offset tre. Which 7/8" is 22.8 mm, these might be the right ones. I am going to be calling them tomorrow asap. I really appreciate all of the help, i am learning a good bit also.

I was going to look at Rusty's, but I forgot. Good find, I willing to bet those are the ones. If it's 1.5, then it has to be metric.
