THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

the red jeep might end up being my DD for a little while, so the Pro lastara's might hang around awhile. If/when I get another DD I wouldn't be against trying something else, pending how I think they do offroad.

There's an interesting read on Maxxis on the PBB.

have a link handy? I'm curious :)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Does anyone know what the name of that really cool and rare 96 and older instrument light panel on the right hand side of the gauges is called?

System Sentry. I think it may even be RENIX only (or pre-94 only) but I am not sure, I have only seen it mentioned here like 5 times, if that.

EDIT: It's SUPER rare. Also, I found a pirate thread with axle part numbers that seems to imply that either all d30s supported it after 86, or it was only available till 86. It had separately wired sensors in a large number of locations, so installing it aftermarket will be a hell of a job.

EDIT2: Check for XJ Waggies. Apparently they had it as one of the stock options?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

that makes me feel good. i've only been wheeling marginally more than you lately, too...

i'm going to try to get mine done asap, but then i still will need tires and rims... i think i'm going to buy new tires and i want to stick with a radial. so i'm thinking MTZ, KM2, or procomp xtreme MT. any others people think i ought consider?

procomps is the devil

i love my km2's

mtz are hokay
i stil dont see why your goin radial it aint a dd and dosnt see much driving time if i were you go 35" LTB's

icky

if they are anything like the 36" tsls i ran they suck a big nut

YESSSSSSS. most favorite tire i have ever run (37's) and they rode like a radial on the street and gripped ANYTHING

i dont forsee the rear 44 living long with those

i had the 37's and they ate my ring and pinion fo lunch 300 miles from my house

Ken, you don't need the side bearing puller unless you arn't making setup bearings out of old ones (or in Colin's case, new ones), save the $300.

You'll need:
- Patience
- A good micrometer (if you have to buy one, get Starrett or Mitutoyo)
- A drop dial indicator, mag base, dovetails and swivels (again, if you have to buy one, get Starrett or Mitutoyo)
- 3lb and/or 5lb deadblow
- 0-30ish in-lb torque wrench (beam style or fancy max load)
- 0-250ish ft-lb torque wrench
- Die grinder or similar to make setup bearings
- Long pry bar
- Patience

That's exactly the conclusion I came to when I found out it'd be $478 with the bearing puller, or $160 without (I didn't realize a bearing puller set like that cost that much or I wouldn't have even put it on the list.) I'm ordering shortly without the bearing puller... how far off am I going to be on carrier bearing preload if I use used bearings for setup bearings instead of new?

I'm not sure what brand justdifferentials carries for dial indicators. Going with a beam style torque wrench as I don't feel like spending TOO much on this stuff. I have a set of calipers (and can borrow a friend's set of digital calipers) but I doubt that's going to be good enough for measuring shims. Got a 10-200ft-lb torque wrench for christmas, hopefully that goes far enough for the pinion nut. d30 specs say 160-260 so we'll see, I'll pick up a heavier torque wrench if I have to.

I don't have a die grinder but I should probably pick one up - I figured I'd bring the old bearing cones to a friend of mine and have him turn a couple thou off them, or be very careful with a rubberized abrasive wheel on my dremel.

As for dead blows, I need those anyways and they're on the Home Depot list for tonight I think.

Thanks a ton for the heads up on this - I make enough silly noob mistakes as it is!

EDIT: the drop dial indicator is only used for setting backlash, right? I've read about half a million diff setup threads/howto pages but I might be remembering this wrong.

Also, I've seen many people say I need a spare pinion nut since they are staked and one will get all chewed up in the process of setting pinion depth and preload, is this correct? Can I simply use the old pinion nut off the old gearset or is this a retarded plan?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

so, about the whole tires deal, I figure I'm gonna be taking it really easy with the Red jeep for awhile, while I save up and buy armor etc, and hopefully a cage sooner than later. Once thats done, then I'll beef up the front axle a little bit. THEN I'll look into different tires for it. So realistically, that's quite a ways away still. Which is fine with me...I hve no problem with enjoying this jeep rather than wrecking it :gee:

I do the same thing to most posts for a couple of reasons... one it helps me keep my place while I read better since sometimes I really thing I could use another pair of reading glasses since I broke my last ones... and 2 so I don't miss anything :D

Carrier bearing pre-load doesn’t need to be set until the end. You can setup the entire deal with a good snug-but-not-to-tight-fit, then add a about three thou on each side. It’ll become more clear once you get started.
I'm not sure what brand justdifferentials carries for dial indicators. Going with a beam style torque wrench as I don't feel like spending TOO much on this stuff. Find out the brand, the last thing you want to do is by a cheap $35-40 dial indicator. You might as well use a ruler at that point. Your accuracy depends on it. A good setup will cost around a $100 for just the drop dial indicator (Starrett or Mitutoyo). Figure a base with attachments about another $50. That’s my take on it anyway.
My beam style cost me $38, that works fine. You only need it for the pinion preload.
If you have a good set of vernier or dial calipers that will work for the shims. I find a micrometer easier for stuff like that, but it isn’t necessary. Digital calipers are for people who don’t know how to use them, IMO.
You might be ok with that toque wrench as the median would be 210ft-lbs (assuming you are correct with 160-260).
I don't have a die grinder but I should probably pick one up - I figured I'd bring the old bearing cones to a friend of mine and have him turn a couple thou off them, or be very careful with a rubberized abrasive wheel on my dremel.
A dremel will be fine. You might have to give it a couple breaks in between as not to heat it up to much, but it’ll work. You don’t have to buy a die grinder.
As for dead blows, I need those anyways and they're on the Home Depot list for tonight I think.
Good.

No problem. We were all there at some point.

Yes. Backlash as well as initial carrier shims. If you are starting with a new carrier.
Also, I've seen many people say I need a spare pinion nut since they are staked and one will get all chewed up in the process of setting pinion depth and preload, is this correct? Can I simply use the old pinion nut off the old gearset or is this a retarded plan?
Get a second pinion nut. For the $2 it isn’t worth wrecking the threads on the new pinion using a old rusted one. Use a brand new one for all the setup, then use the 2nd for the last final assembly so it’ll have been only tightened once.

Did that answer everything?
