THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Driveshafts thread

Or the Rockwell hardness is to soft by ten points. It had proper clearances.
if it's installed incorrectly without the proper clearances it's not impossible. Just saying. And the teeth won't "rip off" so much as wear down to nothing as the cogs slip.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Driveshafts thread

My brother's XJ is having a problem with a Spartan locker. The thing is locking up the wheels in parking lots in 2WD. Basically really loud banging noises that rip the wheel from his hands.

I measured the tolerances with feeler gauges and it was dead in the middle. Tossed the factory thrust washers as directed.

The only thing I noticed was that the new center pin was a bitch to get into the carrier. Had to heat the carrier/freeze the pin just to get it to go in. Other than that the jackstand test seemed to work fine.

The only issue I have with the Spartan in the front of my MJ is that it occasionally doesn't lock up. I never had any issues with the locrites or no-slips I had in my two old XJs.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Driveshafts thread

Have you inspected it since he started having problems or was that when it was installed?

I'd be curious to see if it still happens with the front driveshaft disconnected. I know it's in 2wd but there's still some torque induced from spinning up the mass of the shaft. Obviously it wouldn't make a difference if everything was in proper working order, but that ship has already sailed.

I had issues with my lock rite pulling to parking spots or doing u turns to fast, sounds like the carrier could be tweaked.

Only time I've seen your spartan act up was when Kate did the clutch dump at F&F.

My rear lockright would do that - loud bangs. It was used though and I used the old pins and springs. Supposedly if the springs are worn out it'll do that. I had gotten a replacement spring/pin kit but never reinstalled it to test if it fixed it...but the spring kits are pretty cheap so i'd try that

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Driveshafts thread

The Spartan locker was brand new so everything is good. It's been making the noise from day one.

I was just reading that carrier bearings could cause it? I could kind of see that I guess.

Everything is kind of a possibility since it's a JY axle that I installed in it about 3-4 years ago at this point.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Driveshafts thread

i could see carrier bearings causing it if they are bad enough to let the ends of the shafts or carrier move around. Or if the axle tubes are slightly bent. Makes sense - if everything isn't in a perfectly straight line, the tiny cogs on an autolocker won't mesh fully.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Driveshafts thread

How are the ujoints? Both axle and ds

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Driveshafts thread

I feel the pain I've had an inexplicable hard pull to the right in my 01 for a while now (Detroit truetracs), and it surfaced after a drag-it-thru run on walk in the park at RC. Checked pretty much everything there is to be checked, I'm left with the feeling that it's a tiny misalignment within the case itself

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Driveshafts thread

doing front wheel bearings/rotors/pads today after work. Upgrading to range rover/D90 brakes as well... bigger 4 piston calipers, bigger (now vented!) rotors, bigger pads. can't wait to be able to stop.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Driveshafts thread

$100/caliper for new, not reman, calipers.
$25 per rotor, centric
$40 for pads, also centric
$36 x2 for the hub "kit"... two timkin bearings, a seal, lock washer, and gasket in each.
$9 for the socket for the rover hub nuts
$11 in new hardware because I did not want to chance a bolt being shitty and not useable.

So a little over $400. I don't think thats unreasonable, especially considering I am doing an upgrade. All 4 rotors are completely shot from when the truck was sitting, I've just been pad slapping it because I was lazy. Front wheel bearings started to loosen up so I'm doing that first. I'll do the rears before it gets too cold to do it.

Not bad. I spent 200 on mine to do the fronts. New t bird calipers decent pads and rotors.

Did you make caliper toast? Peanut butter or just regular butter? Answer carefully.
