Project: Freak of Nature

Ok looking at a set of MRW bead lock rims. These are only an 18 bolt bead lock. Is there really any benefit going with ones with more bolts to them or will these still work just fine?

Thanks. Didn't know if there was really any benefit to others with more bolts. I know I'm gonna have to air these tires down to get them to work good. Looks like I'm going to Michigan soon then to get these

late to the party, but i would look for another set of wheels than those MRW.

a buddy has a set and they are ungodly heavy. even after he cut a ton out of the giant dinner plate of a locking ring. he also seems to have sealing issues with the low bolt count.

your 5 on 5.5 now right? want mine? im closer than south lyon. ;)
a guy local to me has a set of ATX wheels in a 17" flavor. that would mean i could step to a bias or even sticky trepador.

See thats where im new to the whole bead lock thing. Have also thought about just going and getting some steel rims and getting some diy bead locks and welding them up.

yes im gonna be 5x5.5. How much you looking for yours? May be out of my range of what im wanting to spend on rims. Weren't yours fancy ones?

Ben, walt's currents wheels are sweet!
i didnt realize how much of an absolute gem they were when i got them, especially at the price.

- 24 bolt locking ring. wheel is dual drilled (48 holes). so if you mess up a thread you can physically clock the ring and been good to go.
- dual inner bead that is super pronounced, so there is no worry about losing the inner bead.
- forged alloy. made by the same people who make walker evans, so they are quality. and best of all... only 24lbs with hardware.

id like to do wheels and tires as a package though.

Well the reason i am looking at the MRW wheels is that they also come with 4-36" tsl's that i could use to have a full size spare. Guy is selling the 4 beadlocks and 4-36" tsl's for $350 and has even said he would meet me half way. Didn't think that was a bad deal but didn't know how good the MRW bead locks were. If i had the extra money to spend on higher end wheels i would but with a new addition coming in April having to work with current jeep fund.

Just don't know which way to go with it. I have looked into the innerair locks as well. Just so many choices out there.

:yelclap: congrats

Heck i don't see these tires balancing very well to begin with. They are currently mounted on some 15x8 alluminum rims and still needed over 15oz of weights to balance. That is why they currently don't have any weights on them.

Do they just not seal very well with them only having 18 bolts on them compared to the normal 32 bolt bead locks? What do you think of the DIY or other comparable weld on bead lock kits out there?

thats what i think... consider that the rings have been drawn on and taken off who knows how many times over their lifetime. yes, its a giant sheet of steel, but itll still twist and bend. doesnt take a lot to cause a slow leak.

for $350 id just get the MRWs and spend some time giving them a good cleaning rather than do DIYs. after the material and time investment into DIY, your really not coming out ahead. ask bjorn (banderso) about his recent bout with DIYs.
