Times suggested: right after NACfest; week of the 20th of june; spring break (when exactly?)
Places suggested: various offroad parks, Baxter SP area, Allagash area (my personal bias, did an 80 mile canoe trip there in 02), Flagstaff area (Bigelow) - I like this one too, did another trip up there in 01.
First question in my mind - when exactly? I need to request time off, I want to get this set ASAP so I can start planning.
Second question - where? I'm heavily biased towards the Allagash area or Flagstaff area personally, but anywhere seems like a good plan.
If this is after the bugs start coming out, bring a couple cans of the strongest DEET based bug spray you can get your hands on. I'm not kidding, Allagash in June is BRUTAL when it comes to bugs, I had about a dozen horseflies, a hundred noseeums, another hundred mosquitoes and black flies following me at all times. The group I was with was all about environmentally friendly bug spray and stuff, it all went fine except for the citronella bug spray... worthless.
EDIT: for some reason I keep getting redneckboarder and nhrocker confused, not sure I got nhrocker's real name right on the list.
yeah - the only thing we saw was a bunch of foundations with some cool boilers, steam systems, etc. Specifically there was a boiler about the size of Colin's truck that I explored (either the end or the top cap were open, I forget which.) The water is fairly disgusting due to silt. We had about 20 people so we split up and did a canoe trip from one end to the other while the other team hiked the trails along the ridge, including Bigelow, then a day or two in met up and camped in the same spot at the far end, switched off, and came back. One of the islands in the lake was connected to the shore by a several thousand foot wide stretch of exposed lakebed due to a drought, complete with 2 to 3 foot deep rotten bark and wood and thousands upon thousands of bleached tree stumps from when they clearcut the area the lake would cover. This was not on our map and resulted in much head scratching and then a loop around the other side of the island in the canoes.Flagstaff sounds cool...ghost town under the water and everything.
any divers here? we could bring our gear and check it out.
edit: found this-
The town was dismantled prior to flooding. When the water was lowered thirty years ago, scavengers took pretty much anything that had been left. Foundations filled with sand remain.
2. The ranger's son has dived it, and claims that the water is alway chocolate brown with almost zero vis due to the fluctuating water levels.
3. Water level at the maximum depth is possibly twelve feet, and drops enough from time to time that you can walk around the area.
