loaded up the xj full of duck decoys and dropped a case of shells in there as well. after work tomorrow i'll throw the 12 gauge in and head it eastern iowa to hunt with the family this weekend. then sunday heading to the bear game for dads 60th bday...i predict the smell of gun powder and good times for the weekend. i already remembered to put my plug in my shotgun. i've had a few oopsies on opening day when the 3rd shell slides into the mag. its amazing how quickly you can fab up a plug the right size in the dark

It's good to hear about you taking a trip for yourself, Craig. No worky in the field. :D

had a good opening day...man i shot HORRIBLY...we wound up knocking down a limit of ducks, but lost one in the thick weeds. could have stayed out there to whack another one, but we packed it up and called it good. tonight i discovered jack daniels whiskey barrel wood chips. used them to smoke the ducks...and i must say, they are DAMN good smoking chips.

all in all, shot about 35 shells for 6 ducks. yikes...looks like i need to hit up some trap ranges

I went over to the north western side of the state where I hunt and saw a few nice bucks. One was a 10 pt that was about 20" wide and one is the big 8 we've been watching, he is a lot wider but his tines are only about 7-9" tall. They both stayed out around 50 yards and It was windy and rained a bit in the morning.. I ended up filling a antlerless tag on saturday on a yearling. Had a nice 15 yard double lung shot and it only ran about 30 yards before piling up HARD against a tree. It was a nice cold weekend, temps dropped down to around 20 last night. With all of the does running around I am pretty excited for the rut to start up!

hunting van buren cnty.

no apples, no apricots, no mast crop.....

it's going to be all about food this year.

I know, ALL of the apple trees i normally pick are empty. Lots of standing corn fields up here still though.

I've only been out monday evening and saw a tail of one about 50 yards out, that's it!

I have seen more acorns this year then the last few combined. Not sure why or how, the river is like 2' lower then usual and that is up from how low it was this summer..

south zone goose opener this weekend...late season duck north opener the following weekend...late season duck south opener the week after that...then its on like donkey kong. the early duck here is just a warm up for the real season. i for one cant wait!

last year's mast in both michigan and missouri where i hunt were insane.

both the reds, whites, were throwing acorns sideways.

It has been a few years for me but i have picked a crossbow and bought my old rem 870 exp combo back this past summer. I still need to sight the cb in and yes i know i am late and have missed opening day, but after this weekend my daughters bed room will be done and i will be switching into stalk mode. man i can not wait to get in the woods again.

my buddy has 2 12 pointers on trail cam...he insists one is over 200"...he couldn't bring him down last year (missed him once) but he swears he will get him this year. we'll see :) im seriously contemplating getting a late muzzleloader tag for iowa deer. i like deer meat, but iowa shotgun season is always during the best duck hunting of the year...and personally, i would much rather duck hunt. scouting some geese tomorrow...hopefully hunting tuesday morning.

Have a good feeling about this bow season. Have pics of 5 diff bucks so far that are all at least 130 class. If they could make it till next year there would b some deffinate wallhangers. My brother also has some good pics of different bucks and my cuz has a pic of a 170 class. Someone is gonna get a good one!!

missing second opener for duck season today...

grumble, grumble...

oh well i know later in the season i will have time off...thats when it really counts
