At the meet and greet, I was asked about the Emigration Trail, or the Hole-In-The-Rock trail on the other side of Lake Powell, so if anyone wants to find it (Google Earth), it ends at 37 Degrees, 13 min, 01.16 sec North; and 110 Degrees, 48 min, 04.94 sec W, or close. If you look down into Cottonwood Canyon, some kind of trail continues, but it is probably not for off-highway motorized vehicle travel. The start is around 37 Degrees, 24', 16.99" N; 110 Degrees, 27', 31.17" W. There are also two other branches out to Hwy 276. Another landmark is the airport that serves Halls crossing is 5 miles northwest of this junction off Hwy 276.

I ran this trail about 4 years ago in the early summer. Unless you are going to try to get way off the main trail (like ascending the Kaiparowits Plateau from the East), you won't need 33's or a rear locker. What limits you is how lately they have had a road grader down there to smooth out the wasboard.

It sounds like you are talking about Hole in the Rock Road, these guys are talking about Hole in the Rock Trail, which starts off Hwy 276, on the opposite side of the lake. But I will agree with you, a Cherokee on 31's with the sway bar disconnected is all that is required to do it. A more important factor is making sure your rig is mechanically sound as that is a looong way from civilization. In 2009 I had to tow a friend's jeep all of the way out of that trail.

I ran this trail in march with some great guys from RME. It is long, and very fun and scenic. I think I could be done in any good high clearance 4x4 with low range but, I am glad that I am on 33" tires and I rocked the diff regularly. Those with lower lifts and stock bumpers dragged a lot. It's at the bottom of "the chute". He was trying a more difficult line.

Yes we saw the writeup in RME on the trail and hope to avoid anything similar to Jeeps on their sides. We have 3 vehicles lined up so far. Josh's XJ locked on 35's, a TJ on 33's and no lockers, plus whatever Israel is taking? Alex, its good to see you lurking on here.

Von, I'll be riding along vicariously! I can only afford 1 trip in May and I'll save that for the 3 day weekend that follows your trip. I was also planning on viewing the annular eclipse from home on the 20th. It looks like you will have a good view of it on HITR also.
