help installing my stroker?

Is the motor out of the XJ yet? Do you have all the pieces cleaned up and ready to install? Also I would clean off the paint from mating surfaces on the head such as the intake and exhaust and water inlet for better seal.

Maybe I missed this but do you have to install the oil pump and other things Brendan? I've done valve cover, water pump, thermostat gasket etc...but things like timing chain cover/harmonic balancer and oil pump I have no experience with. As I said, I'm free the weekend of the 13th and then again the 27th. I know Tyler is busy for a while here...but hopefully we can work something out. What's everyone elses' schedule looking like?

My weekends have freed up a bit now I have no ball and chain to deal with and weekdays are pretty free too once the Indy Airshow is over. I basically have off from after the airshow through the Brickyard 400 weekend off except the 20th of this month for a wedding up north. I have tools, engine stand and hoist and can do about anything engine wise (even rebuild them in my sleep)

So, I'm just going to play this by ear, and if it works out that I'm free the weekend you're doing this (20/21st?), I may burn down there real quick and lend a hand (only a couple hour drive I think). I'm definitely not a mechanic but I did manage to swap the 350 in my Tahoe, and if you've swapped one motor you've swapped them all right?

You might want to just run to harbor freight and buy an engine hoist and a stand, I think I picked up both for around $160 or so. Then put them on craigslist when you're done and get most of your money back. My theory was that if I had to rent a hoist, and something went wrong, I'd be paying $40/day until I was done. The stand is pretty nice to have, especially since there are sensors and tinware (timing cover, oil pan) off the old motor you're going to need. Also, for putting the oil pan on, there's really not a great way to do that without a stand, unless you trust your hoist enough to hold it while you crawl underneath and get the pan on from the bottom (which just sounds unsafe).

I spent a couple evenings just swapping little things over from my old motor and getting the new motor "complete" and ready to put in. Depending on the lift you have, I'd recommend pulling the header panel and radiator (really a pain if you have A/C though) so you don't have to lift the engine so high in the air - it's a little scary having that much weight up so high. Just wanted to offer what little advice I could - I bought a long block and figured I'd be good to go, but as usual all the little stuff took up a ton of time.
