GUNS & AMMO

Skully, don't take this too personally, but what do you stick in your butt?

:laugh3:

Sorry, to answer your question with a question, but how long have you been waiting to use that line? :looney:

Now to answer the question it is not very big in there but can store small screwdriver, extra batteries, bore snake and a lens cloth.

Personally I try to stow my lens cloths in clean areas but I give you props for fitting a good amount of kit in there.

The only other area is the grip plug but I have a sight adjustment tool in there as well and gets just as dirty. I stick the lens cloth in a small closed baggy so it dont get too dirty. :D

Eternally juvenile. It's more of a lifestyle, than a frame of mind.

I'm still giggling when I put your answer to my question...

"I kept this uncomfortable hunk of metal up my...." Well, I think we've all seen Pulp Fiction.

Bang Bang. Thread back on track.

Matt could probably spout off all kinds of crazy nerd talk about the ammo.

I can tell you that in my FNP-9 the TulAmmo steel case 9mm FMJ isn't very accurate, and that the Remington cheap stuff shoots pretty good for me. I've also tried some different Federal variants and I like them, but as I'm just plinking anyways I stick with the cheap Remington FMJ from Wal-Mart.

My "you threatened my family and therefore I'm going to kill you" magazine is loaded up with Federal Hydra-shock JHP which is 124gr and has a rated muzzle velocity of 1120fps. I've shot off a few mags worth of it and find it to be plenty accurate for my pistol skill level. I haven't measured the velocity to verify if its true to claim though.

I also have a box of Hornady Zombie Max in the case, because you just never know. :D

Are you looking for defense rounds or are you getting into competition?

No competition for me, it's not by bag.
just exploring PPA ammo at this point.

I know some are better than others, some are pure hype, some are just junk (RE: Russian).

I've read about certain types of ammo being more prone to jamming/stove piping...and that is never a good thing.

Supposedly Speer Gold Dot is the preffered ammo of many PD's including the NYPD. That's gotta mean something. :dunno:

Hey man, my FNP-9 will shoot that cheap Russian Ammo all day long w/o a single issue. I just find it harder to maintain accuracy with it. And my SKS loves it. I'm saving up to start ordering up the spam cans of Russian hollow points for it.

In the end Frank you're going to want to pick your top few choices and then go drop coin and take them out for test runs in your specific weapon. What you and your gun like might not be the same as me and mine. To be honest I haven't tried anything else for a defense round as I like how the hydra-shocks shoot for me. Next time I go out shooting though I'm going to try a few of the other options out there and see if I like any of them more.

Here is a good list of similar types I found while researching the Hydra-shock.
Barnes XPB 115 gr JHP (copper bullet)
Federal Tactical 124 gr JHP (LE9T1)
Federal HST 124 gr +P JHP (P9HST3)
Remington Golden Saber 124 gr +P JHP bonded (GSB9MMD)
Speer Gold Dot 124 gr JHP
Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P JHP
Winchester Partition Gold 124 gr JHP (RA91P)
Winchester Ranger-T 124 gr +P JHP (RA9124TP)
Winchester Ranger Bonded 124 gr +P JHP (RA9BA)
Winchester Ranger-T 127 gr +P+ JHP (RA9TA)
Federal Tactical 135 gr +P JHP (LE9T5)
Federal HST 147 gr JHP (P9HST2)
Remington Golden Saber 147 gr JHP (GS9MMC)
Speer Gold Dot 147 gr JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 147 gr JHP (RA9T)
Winchester 147 gr bonded JHP (RA9B/Q4364)

I do know that the Hydra-shock was and still continues to be a very popular LEO round, and I have found lots of reports about it being a 1 shot stopper for them in 9mm trim. Its a bullet that has been around for awhile and has a good reputation.

My impression of Russian surplus has been good. I avoid Wolf brand comercial though as I had a lot of Wolf Military Classic that just sucked. A lot of FTFs and some primers that liked to blow back.

Traded it 2:1 for some PMC223A, best thing I did with it.

Still have, um, *some* Golden Tiger x39, Yugo Surplus, and some others...

Gold Dot's are very popular. I have a few boxes of Remington Golden Sabre that I keep loaded up. Not sure if they're the best or shit really. They run in my gun though, so that's what matters.

As far as 124gr vs 147gr it will mainly come down to feel/perceived recoil. The 124gr load will feel more snappy in recoil, where the 147gr load would feel more like a push back, rather than a snap up. Some folks don't like the heavier bullet recoil and prefer a little snap. I shoot competition and I most definitely prefer the heavier bullet, though the difference between 124gr and 147gr isn't as dramatic as 115gr and 147gr.

The 124gr, at the velocities that you mentioned, has slightly more energy at the muzzle. There would most likely be negligible accuracy differences, especially at self-defense distances.

I say get a box of both and try them out paying close attention to the feel of the recoil. More importantly, pay attention to the front sight after you've taken a slow, well-aimed shot. See if you notice any difference on where the front post settles when the gun returns from recoil. The bullet weight which allows you to get an acceptable sight picture back in the least amount of time should be the one you choose.

Once you've picked one, buy and shoot as much of that ammo you can afford through the gun to make sure that it functions 100%. I would run at least 200 through it if possible before I trusted it, which is probably on the low end of what's generally recommended.
