GUNS & AMMO

You gripe at the weight but they are heavy for a reason. Personally I wouldn't want to shoot one that was too light. They belt you around enough being heavy.

Seriously though, I'd drive over to Wyoming for the weekend just to pop a few rounds through it.

I know another guy who has one but he always flakes out when we plan on a shooting day.

Any plans on setting up to reload for it? I've heard presses are ungodly expensive.

Actually I never considered the recoil all that bad. My Weatherby rifles and other belted magnums I own beat me way worse than any fifty I have fired. The Barrett single shot is several pounds lighter and does not seem to recoil any worse then the Armalite.

Noise is another story...you want to stand directly behind the shooter with plugs a muffs on.....no exceptions.

This round is really hard on scopes and cheap ones will not hold up. I have a friend in Casper with an AR-50 that tried a light duty scope. He was shooting it when the glass just fell out. The funny thing is I don't think its the recoil on these guns so much as the harmonics. I am looking at several tactical scopes but at a grand+ a pop the investment will be a month or so down the road.

You are more than welcome to come up when I get it put together. :gee: Current Rocky Mountain Discounts is selling ammo at about 30 bucks for ten....actually cheaper per round than most high end belted magnum ammo.

I definitely will be reloading and am in the process of getting my poop together on this as well. In fact I already have a press lined up.

Do they have any 1000 yard ranges in your area?

One, but it is strictly for the black powder Quigley types. I have friends with ranches though. And, Like Castle said Wyoming is wide open and thankfully gun friendly. I'd still like to hit the Ferris Mountains southwest of Casper for an outing. I researched the area and got maps a couple of years ago. Just never made it. It's a small mountain range with limited access but it looks like it could be fun. There are even some sand dunes on the west side. The BLM contact told me at the time that if I wanted to get in there I had better do it soon since it is a proposed wilderness area. It would be a convenient place to meet do some wheeling/camping and maybe toss in some shooting for fun. That and it would be a reasonable drive for both me and anyone coming north. If nothing else I am planning on going north to the outing in Whitehall in July that Mt Mike has notified us about. Montana hasn't gotten too liberal yet so that might be an alternative.

Last full week in July is CO Fest. We are going to have a hard enough time getting people there with the price of gas and the economy. :)

I don't have a .50, but I'd sure buy the ammo and give you the brass just to try one.

Maybe there should be a Meet and Great. We've never done one in Wyoming. Not that bad of a drive for the Ft. Fun folks.

I am 25 miles from the Montana Wyoming border so even then its a bit of a haul. I think that Ft. Collins would still be right at 400 miles.

Hey Ryan have you done much out north of Rawlins? There is some pretty awesome looking country up that direction but I have never wheeled much of it.

Either way it will be later in the summer before the beast is ready for a debut. I am hoping to get the rest of my hardware in June. Then I still need a scope....which will be damn near what I paid for the rifle. I could throw a cheap scope on just to shoot it, but I would really much rather do it once and do it right.

I probably should just tell you no way so you don't end up like me....once you squeeze the trigger on a 50 you will be starting down the road to ruin. One shot and then the gotta have one syndrome kicks in.

Been through the area a lot in my semi that's about it.

I'm always up for exploring new country though.

Know anyone or is there anyone reading this forum that may have explored the area. I was just thinking it's nice and remote. Great place to probably get some wheeling in and not alarm anyone when the beast gets turned loose.

Miracle Mile is remote. Well, more remote than anything here in the Denver metro area. OK, maybe that wouldn't work. I don't think the fishermen would complain but it would scare the heck out of the cows which makes for an unhappy rancher.

Oh, and I'll be there in mid June. :) Getting my fishing/drinking on.

The Mile is nice and there are some big a$$ fish that come out of there. You really need to come float the Bighorn. I have never done it but the trout fishing is supposed to be fantastic there.

I think I will pursue a trip into the Ferris Mountains. They are near Pathfinder reservoir and remote so gun fire shouldn't freak anyone out. That might be a nice place to spend a night camping after wheeling and shooting. I'll keep the IC and Colorado Chapters posted as to what I find out.

On a side note I hope I haven't high jacked this thread...if I have let me know. Wasn't my intention when I first posted here.

My family actually had a badger for a pet......but that's another story.

I will be tied up for a couple weeks on some projects here, but I plan on taking a little trip south soon to do some scouting. Might be able to hook up on the mile for some sort of M&G. Get me some dates when you have time. Ryan......watchya think?

I'll start working on it when things let up in a week or two....job is gonna hav me hopping for a few days.
