Quick question: I have the chance to get a good deal on the 1994 FSM, I have a 1993 Sport, are there any differences I should be aware of?
No. There may be some tiny issues, but you can pretty much break down FSMs in these year ranges without difficulty:
1984-1986XJ, 1986MJ
1987-1988 (some early 1989) XJ/MJ (AMC production)
1989-1990 XJ/MJ (Chrysler Production)
1991-1995XJ, 1991-1992MJ (Chrysler Production, OBD-I)
1996XJ (this one is the oddball. You can probably cover it with a 1997-up FSM, since it's OBD-II, but it's the last year of the old body style...)
1997-2001XJ (Chrysler Production, OBD-II.)
There are some variations - like the D44 and VM 2.5L Turbo Diesel being used overseas/export variants and the like - but you should be OK with this breakdown of model years.
N.B. Expect trouble trying to find FSMs for 1987 and earlier. I
think I've seen ChryCo FSMs for 1988, but that was a transition year, so it gets a little funky. The control systems didn't change over 1987-1990, but some of the wiring colours damn sure
did. You can use any 1987-1990FSM for any 1987-1990 rig, but expect to have to back-check wiring colours across 1988/1989.
Also, if you find any AMC FSMs, those are usually loose-leaf bound (I've got a 1987 around here somewhere...) and you'll get them in a rather large box.
Chilton's is OK for in the meantime, but I tend to use the Haynes manual for things like bench pads, evening up the odd leg on a table, a 30-yard knife-throwing target, sopping up oil spills, and the like. (I still have a lot of AOHell CD's that I use for coasters... And paintball/airsoft targets. Also a nice skill test at 300-500 yard on desert trips.)
