Do you have a Haynes Manual?

Do you have some type of repair manual for your rig?

I have a Haynes... its great for keeping drink rings off the workbench, or a good place to lay my sandwhich. Other than that, its pretty much useless. Not worth the cheap paper its printed on.

The FSM is the only way to go...

Well, the poll is pretty biased, it's 35:1 in favor of "yes I have a manual" but there's a huge difference between the quality of the Haynes or Chilton's and the FSM.

For the record, I've got all three. There's a Haynes and a Chilton's somewhere in the garage...but the FSM is on CD and I know where THAT is.

 Do you not understand "some type of repair manual.."? There is no biased to this question, just a simple yes I have some form of manual to help with repairs or I don't. Granted you may not have a good manual, hence the reason for the tread to find one that is suitable for your needs. To give feedback on the quality on manuals. Or didn't you comprehend that part of the forum? :dunno:

Don't fight kids. I have FSM's for 88-89-90 & 91 on disc, I really like them, I also have Chiltons on disk, its OK at best. My "paper" FSM's are still in wrappers and will probably stay that way.

Quick question: I have the chance to get a good deal on the 1994 FSM, I have a 1993 Sport, are there any differences I should be aware of?

No. There may be some tiny issues, but you can pretty much break down FSMs in these year ranges without difficulty:

1984-1986XJ, 1986MJ
1987-1988 (some early 1989) XJ/MJ (AMC production)
1989-1990 XJ/MJ (Chrysler Production)
1991-1995XJ, 1991-1992MJ (Chrysler Production, OBD-I)
1996XJ (this one is the oddball. You can probably cover it with a 1997-up FSM, since it's OBD-II, but it's the last year of the old body style...)
1997-2001XJ (Chrysler Production, OBD-II.)

There are some variations - like the D44 and VM 2.5L Turbo Diesel being used overseas/export variants and the like - but you should be OK with this breakdown of model years.

N.B. Expect trouble trying to find FSMs for 1987 and earlier. I think I've seen ChryCo FSMs for 1988, but that was a transition year, so it gets a little funky. The control systems didn't change over 1987-1990, but some of the wiring colours damn sure did. You can use any 1987-1990FSM for any 1987-1990 rig, but expect to have to back-check wiring colours across 1988/1989.

Also, if you find any AMC FSMs, those are usually loose-leaf bound (I've got a 1987 around here somewhere...) and you'll get them in a rather large box.

Chilton's is OK for in the meantime, but I tend to use the Haynes manual for things like bench pads, evening up the odd leg on a table, a 30-yard knife-throwing target, sopping up oil spills, and the like. (I still have a lot of AOHell CD's that I use for coasters... And paintball/airsoft targets. Also a nice skill test at 300-500 yard on desert trips.)

WTF? Where'd that come from?

All of the above, depending on the vehicle. I have an FSM and Haynes for my XJ. Haynes for my Durango, Chilton for my Nissan p/u.

Sorry, just been dealing with people that don't seem to get the real point of things lately,!!!1 sorry wasn't trying to come off harsh. But to call my poll biased is BS:huh: , so it irritated me and just wanted this to be a good informative tread on manuals. Then I get someone saying it's biased and this and that. Whatever.

I haven't seen a FSM for the XJ
maybe find one on e-bay?

BOB

I picked up the one we have on Ebay.
Got a decent deal on it too IIRC.

Let me know if anyone sees a FSM (4-sale) for a 87 MJ or 95 XJ

Thanks!

BOB

Something I noticed about the manuals, is they all have there specialty and all have a few holes in the info.
Haynes isn't bad for an overview, troubleshooting and repairs for some common or likely trouble spots. Chiltons covers some aspect in more depth and often offers component repair sections that can be a gold mine. The FSM is the most detailed, but can be hard to navigate. Heck it took me as long to find some of the various component repairs in the FSM as it did to read the whole Haynes.
Just to throw something out there, the military has (or did) have a lot of XJ's. And the military often has the most complete reference material available for most anything in the system (it's part of the procurement process).
I'd sure like to have the numbers for the XJ military manuals. The manuals come in layers, mild, medium and complex, from simple repairs to component rebuild. They are usually well organized and easy to reference.
They have to be out there somewhere.

Yup,

Hayne's - good for some stuff but lacks details.

Chilton's - good for OTHER stuff - still lacking in detail

FSM online - Has all the details, just harder to find.

I have all three but I usually get more of the info I need from here or JeepForum or trhe links from write-ups by those guys who REALLY know what they're talking about.
