Beeeeeeer

Bootleggers is one of my favorites. Try the Palomino Pale Ale while you're there.

I just discovered them this last weekend at a buddies beer tasting shin dig. I bought their "black phoenix" which is chipotle and coffee ale. I kind of bought it on a dare last night haven't opened it yet. I'm either going to love it or hate it. But I will have to try that Palomino Pale Ale.

The Knuckle Sandwich Double IPA is what made Bootlegger's somewhat famous. Try it if you get a chance. It's got a real kick to it. It's usually hard to find and it sells out very quickly. They rarely offer growler fills for this reason.

Did a beer tasting last night. 9 different vintage Ommegang Three Philosophers. This is a Belgium style quad, with 2% Cherry Lambic. The beers ranged in age from 2006 to 2013. They've all been stored in my root cellar for the whole time.

The interesting thing was that a lot of folks liked the midrange aged beers (2008-2010) better than the older stuff. We did this as a double blind tasting, so no one knew which beer was which during the tasting. There were quite a bit of difference between some of the beers.

It was a lot of fun - took three hours to complete.

What there a favorite? Was there a consensus on that? Any of them fall off/no good?

9 years is a great start. :D Did a 13 year vertical of SN Bigfoot Barleywine-style Ale. Started with oldest and worked our way up, leaving a little bit in each glass so we can go back and forth between the years and compare/contrast. And then finally blending a little bit of each into one glass for a Grand Cru!

None of them fell off. They were all very good. Three Phils is 9.7 - 9.8%, so I expected they could age OK for the 9 years. My favorite was the 2006 that wasn't Cave Aged. I was rather surprised by that. I did tend to favor the older ages. There was no single year that was a favorite. A couple of folks that weren't at all used to Belgium style beers preferred the younger beers. The GM of PSR and myself both liked to older beers universally.

The other thing we noticed both at this tasting, and at a three year tasting of a Sassion was that the fresh beer was preferred over a one year old aged brew. When the aging got past 4 years, the preference swing to the aged beer.

One of the mistakes I made in the tasting, I think, was using too small a glass. I bought cheap 2 oz shot glasses from the dollar store (not were I got that great Albanian brew :twak:). The small glasses didn't allow for a head to form, or to get good aromas. We did have enough beer that people could go back and sample previous tastes to be able to compare.

The blending would have been a great idea - didn't think of that!
