Your Oil Recomendation

I have been doing some searching for a good price on Brad Penn Racing oil. The 10w-30 has 1,500 ppm zinc. I finally found a place in NC that sold me a case of it for 39.49 plus 10.74 to UPS it to my door here in Massachusetts. That works out 4.18 per quart and I don't even have to drive to the store. I have read nothing but good about this oil................yet. Now that I have bought some I suppose I will start reading how terrible the stuff is. For those who might be interested, here is the web site of the company. You have to do the ordering by phone. Very nice people to deal with.

Hey Stump...thanks for all the research you've been doing...

Anyways, did you mean the Regular Mobile 1 with the silver cap? The red cap is the "Clean" version with the low ZDDP levels. The regular is synthetic right? So what would you say to the people who don't want to use synthetic right now because of high mileage...like in the 200's? Would you still recommend that oil or would you say to go with something else? I've read this whole thread but still haven't come up with the recommended oil if you DON'T want to use full synthetic.

I'll probably just start using the Regular Mobile 1 in 15W-50 like they recommended but just wondering about non-syn. I guess I'll be replacing my valve cover gasket soon...just did the rear main.

I'm gonna give that Brad Penn straight 30w a shot when I break in the stroker and then use the 10w30.

I recently replaced my RMS and oil filter adapter o-rings and filled it up with Mobil 1 10-30 and my lifter knock is gone, it idles and runs smother and runs cooler. The oil I had in it was Castrol GTX 10-30 for about 3500 miles. What does all this mean :dunno: but I am happy with the results.

I have used nothing but M1 Syn for my Viper motor (10 qts:hang: ). Will always use M1 HM for my heep! No problems at all!!

Another vote for Mobil 1 HM and Mobil 1 filters. All my junk uses it and I have no complaints living down here in the hottest place with the highest humidity in the known world.
Hip Hip Horray for Mobil 1

I'm sure Mobil is great but it's not too cheap, this is straight from the Rotella desk and since its about 25 clams a gallon up here I'm going to Rotella 5W40 syn from Quaker state Q and am looking forward to the huge increase in zddp's

Dear customer:

Rotella T CJ-4 15W40 has a Zinc level of 1200ppm

Rotella T Synthetic 5W40 has a Zinc level of 1600ppm

Be aware that even though the antiwear level is high for Rotella oils, diesel engine oil formulations are different than engine oils for gasoline performance engines.

Hope this help.

saw this thread up again, been a while and no oil leaks, thank god cuz I moved back home and we have a cement driveway. Engine runs the same, gonna do an oil change around 3-4K, run some seafoam through the engine before and change. Then prob 5k between changes.

All 4.0s have flat tappets.

Does anyone sell a roller tappet retrofit kit for the 4.0?

Some company should make them. Although there is only 1 make the 4.0 come in (Jeep, as far as I know) and it might not be high enough numbers to produce a roller-retrofit cam. It would make sense. Thats why many companys don't make hard to find parts, becuase theres no justification to produce multi-million dollar tooling to make a part. In part, thats why the 4.0 I'snt produced anymore, the tooling got old.

M1 is great oil. I have nothing bad to say about their oil and filters.

Good to hear your leak free. I'm also leak free after 3 months on the RMS and pan gasket.

i have a 98 4.0 with +130k and have previously just used whatever was on sale...noticed oil pressure dropping significantly after the engine warmed up and switched to Castrol GTX High Mileage and that took care of the problem...also used to have a drop or two...which is no longer there either

ive stuck with that ever since

Yella Terra has a "bolt on" kit that works without needing a spacer for your valve cover. I think its around $400.

1995 XJ 4.0 HO 180k....first oil change since I bought it. No visible smoke, very minor oil leak one or two spots, no noticeable oil burning.

I expect temps to be 30f - 95f from here till next oil change.

Should I run 10w30, or 10w40 Mobil 1 "High Mileage"

TIA:)

How's your oil pressure?

I just read all 14 pages of this discussion and had a laugh. I have a Harley and read the Harley Tech Talk forums and they have the same discussion once or twice a week! Harley owners are more picky with their oil than Cherokee owners are. The question is how many 4.0 litre engines have you known to blow up, wear out, etc. because of the brand of oil that was in it? If you change your oil and filter@ 3-4000 mile intervals with the reccomended oil viscosity then every thing will be ok. But don't listen to me, I run Mobil 1 also.:laugh3:
