Your Oil Recomendation

It's marginal. That's pretty cold. But you can do it. The pour point is negative 45 or something so take that FWIW. I wouldn't personally run it until it was consistently 30 mornings

I am sure M1 High Mileage is a good oil. I was using M1 Extended Performance until I did some research on ZDDP. Last week, I switched to Royal Purple (API-SL). It is made for older engines with flat tappets. I still use the M1 filter.

$28 at Walmart ? dont buy the 6 packs, get the 5 quart container, $20, get 6 of them THEN get a six pack. Thats two years of oil there... I just did three of mine this weekend, time for another wally world stop.. I'm down to 7 jugs and three filters.

The 5 quart container is $22.00 and the 6th quart it $6.00: $28.00 after tax.

source?

I only use K&N oil filters on my 68 Camaro (302 period correct right down to the spark plugs) beucase I need a ton of flow and don't want to pay for nickel wielding the crack/hole in the block after a flogging at road america.

K switching to a Mobil just seems most of you guys run it and its readlily availible so whats the deal with Mobil Clean High Mileage? I do like that it says helps restores seals, who knows if it works or not.

IMHO, all mobil oils are good (SM rated oil is worthless for flat tappet cams), but the Mobil 1 High Millage is the best they make for our 4.0 jeeps. I think Mobil 1 HM is rated at 1000 PPM ZDDP, and is rated SL. So, this means they are better for flat tappet lifters, new or rebuilt. ZDDP will only increase the life of the engine. Who wants that? Not me! :bs:

I actually found a parts store in town here in PA that carries it. $9 a quart and not a big selection either. Thats a bit too steep for me, that would have been 6 quarts for the XJ, 6 for the ZJ, 4 for the TJ and an average of 4 times a year, yeowza.

Actually I just noticed I have 6 empty 1 quart containers, I'm just going to split up one of the 5 quarters and not bother buying the 6 packs anymore. If I had a garage to keep it in I'd buy a 25 gallon can, it gets pretty cheap when you buy it that way, about $3 a quart.
God, I'm getting cheap in my old age :D :D :D

Stumpalump,

My source is just reading many threads on this forum. If you look at those threads, they will also link to more credible sources. I am still open minded on this, I wish that it was not so hard to find an API-SL oil. But, after reading these threads, I think it is important. Hot Rod magazine also had an article on this issue.

Mobil 1 HM is SL rated. Royal Purple is great oil, its just more expensive that M1.

Just some info on filters. I had read a article that tested flow vs. filtering ability. They took OEM filters against the aftermarket and the Motorcraft and Delco was way ahead of the Fram, Napa Etc..I work at a Ford Dealer and we have non-stop problems with the cheaper filters, mostly bleed down. The Motorcraft FL-1A fits and also the Motorcraft HP-1 Racing Filter Fits.

I read an article where they took a bunch of diff oils and put them in several new york taxi's. after a certain amount of mileage they drained and tested all of them. the results proved that all the oils were at the same viscosity and had the same engine protection. They said that the gas station brands were just as effective as Mobil-1 or anything. I myself use whatever is on sale and add a treatment of Lucas.

I just called Mobil on behalf of NAXJA. It got me to the top that way. I told the engineer what we do,what engine we use and our concerned about our flat tappet cams. He was very clear and consise on recomendations for us and this is what I got from him with a backing from his team members: ZDDP levels are highest in these 4 oils:

15W-50 extended drain 1300-1400 ppm ZDDP. best oil and their 1st choice.

15W-50 regular mobil 1 Thats the good old stuff they brought back with the red top and has same ZDDP.

Turbo 5-40 but only if you are constantly below zero. He said use 15W50 for me in Colorado winters.

Moble delvac 15w40 is also above 1000 ppm ZDDP and will work.

Anything else will have less than 1000 ppm ZDDP and is not recomended by them!

I have a similar call into Royal Purple and left a detailed message as to what they have and recomend for us. I'll post up when they call back. Mobil 1 is nice because you get it at walmart but remember to look for the red cap 15W50 or 15W50 extended drain unless you are in a frozen below zero climate and then use the turbo 5W40.

Turbo Diesel M1 5 40 is Delvac rebottled!
For a while all diesel oil was good or better because they removed most ZDDP from regular oil to stop harm to catalitic converters. I think it's just a matter of time before they phase out that oil because the new diesels require a new oil. In fact I read that Ford is requirering an oil sample with all engine warrenty claims so they can void claims from those that use the old oil. This crap seems like it changes every month and this thread may be worthless by summer.

Would going from traditional oil to something like Mobil 1 10W-50 extended drain be worth it for a somewhat-leaky 4.0L like mine w/192K on it?
