Yet another... Build thread for an xj on 40s and one tons in norcal

beend ringing the XJ just around downtown and it feels like its all over the road. Twitchy steering. like wont drive straight. weird.
check engine light came on and the rig feels very gutless.

any ideas on the steering? perhaps air in the system?

I am thinking of going to a real 3 link now to see if that helps the situation , and swapping in the rear deavers, and bleeding the hydro again. the whole setup seems overly sensitive. So weird since I don't remember it being like this. Ugh.

You said it drove great before. Find and fix the issue before complicating it with new suspension geometry otherwise you may never find the issue and your at square one again.

I don't know if it drove fine before. Just better

seems to be running kinda crappy. has a code for the VSS. Is the thing that holds that sped gear in the VSS?

Toe in is like perfect, around 1/8-3/16" toed in.

Caster measures 12 degrees off the high steer arms

Yeah I'll try 8* out.

pass side lower is 1" longer than the driver side. going to fix that asap.

Yeah so pinion angle is awesome. The upper is maxed in. So if caster gets too low I'll have to either shorten it down or just build a true 3 link

had some super wallowed out holes on the LCAs at the frame side. noticed that while adjusting the pass side lower in one inch.

welded weld washers on the frame side clayton cross member and picked up some longer 9/16 bolts, 4.5" long , they barely clear the inside of the mount.

swapped the deaver 4.5" leaves in on the driver side. lost an inch of lift , so the 1.25 shackles, the 4.5" deavers, and at least 1" from the shackle drop boxes, I am at a minimum of 6.5" of lift, so that means I was at least at 7.5" previously . I am going to run it as is and stretch the rear for MJ leaves soon enough. I wonder if deaver will send me a MJ main leaf.

from adjusting the lowers, caster went from 12*(roughly) to around 7-9* , so that should help things out.

the lower john joints are super long. they have a 5" shank. these are awesome.

also installed the fan and the lengthened rear DS and dropped off the front to get lengthened.

uca was loose, sort of. the jam nuts were tight, but not enough, the whole UCA was rotating with the jam nuts. cranked them down and its all good.

johnnie joints were loose so I tightened them down too, and greased them up. they had a lot of slop in them. I am hoping that is it.

cut down the MJ overload leaf into a longer lift block and threw it in the deaver packs. Before adding it, I lost around 1-1.25" of lift with the deavers, with it in there, I've only lost .25" on the driver and gained .25" on the pass side, but they were not even before so now its an even 7.75" between the top of the tire and bottom of the fender.

using 7/16 grade 8 coarse thread bolts, ground down, as center pins. Thats actually what came with the deavers .

These things are basically a sprung .7" lift block .
