winch debate

smittybilts are another of the "E" series from Milemarker. really. They offered to sell them to Quadratec under a different name but Quadratec turned them down. So, they went to 4wd and used the Smittybilt name 4wd owns.

there's a big multi-page thread on pirate about the Smittybilt winch. fibercore wire, though.

My recommendation at work is any Warn above the M8000 if you have the cash, or the Superwinch EPI 9.0 if you're on a budget since they sent the letter to MoabJeeper about their new warranty. The Superwinch is heavier (roughly 115lbs) but it gives you a little extra wire (125ft, and a free snatch block) and the solenoid is much stronger than the standard Warn 4 solenoid design. The hardcore guys at work run the EPI 9 unless they got a Warn for cheap. A big benefit from the EPI is that it runs at half of the current draw than most of the Warn winches. That means it'll be much nicer to your charging system, and let you winch twice as far if your engine dies or can't run (under water!). That's the primary reason I picked the Superwinch for my XJ.

Was watching eBay and found a new MileMarker 12000 for $549 delivered. It was from National Tire & Wheel in West Virginia.
Only made a couple of pulls with it but am happy so far. It is slow compared to the Warn but it stays cool on a long pull and the Warn was too hot to touch. So all you guys with the Warns that you brag on the speed. You're right, but how about the heat factor, do they get too hot?

whatevah made a good point about current draw (amps). A planetary type wench draws less amps but the line speed is slower. Jeep had Ramsey REP6000 as an option for the XJ because its' amp draw was less and Mark Smith, (their offroad adviser) was pissed at Warn for not sponsoring him. The 6000 was way to light for what we do with our XJs today. I went through 2 before going to a REP8000 in 1989. It still works like new in my 91 XJ without a roller fairlead. I also used much heavier battery cables than what came with the Ramsey. Because of the low amp draw, I don't worry about needing more than one battery. Practice using your wench and always rewind it correctly (as soon as you can) and it will last longer.

hey.. laugh it up about two winches.... I was stuck not too long ago in such a way.. that I was regretting not having one winch up front one in the back ;)

I was talking about quality, not *quantity on the trail. :D

I know how I did it, I just used 1 block jammed between the cable and the bumper to ease the cable out of the farelead a bit and pulled to a tree to the back of the Jeep. Tiresome and kept binding up.

I searched the web for a cable pull diagram of how to do a rearward self-recovery with a forward winch and a snatch block, but no joy.

Do you folks have a diagram?

Ron

Warn and Superwinch.

How Milemarker and Ramsey ever ended up being considered "premium gear" I'll never understand.

Got a Ramsey Rep 8K I've used on my CJ for 12 years, re-built the motor about four years ago. Slower than molasses flowing uphill in January, but it works. Put a Warn M8K on the XJ, haven't used it yet. It can't possibly be slower than that damn Ramsey, and being a Warn I doubt it's a piece of junk. Time will tell, I'll evaluate once I get the XJ stuck.:D
