winch debate

I've been using an old Ramsey REP8000 for about 4 years (got it used),have done quite a bit of winching with it, and have had ZERO problems. It's slow but does the job.

Also, add one more vote for synthetic rope. It's stronger and weighs significantly less.

My fist rig came with a well used REP8000. I broke both side frames from side loading the cable and just tossed the top bar. I pulled so hard I broke the cable twice and once it was because the controller got pinched and shorted to the in position. The winch never stoped untill the cable snaped. That dang thing took a beating for many years and I would buy a beat up used one and rely on it anyday. The new Ramsys come from a factory in Tulsa OK. The USA. I stoped by the factory about a year ago and a real engineer came out to greet me and tell me all about them. Nobody else can say all their products are made by Americans. If you have a grand to spend then the Warn is king but for a regular guy a Ramsey or fast Superwinch are hard to beat. I wound up with a Superwinch but it does not freewheel worth a dam. You basically need to power it out. Now that I'm used to that I'm OK with it because it's a fast winch. Detours gave me a smoking deal on one when I bought his Backbone mount.

thanks for the info guys.

i think for now i'll count the pennies and start savin, so i can buy the whole caboodle at once. i'll just keep watchin the stuff for a sale, and i'm thinkin i'll prolly buy a warn......now its time to pick which one lol. So it's the girl gone shopping factor? :D :D :D You spent only 3.5 days in SoCal but it seems that you quickly picked up all the "blonde girl" habbits :D :D :D :D

ya know I'm just messin with ya :D

im looking at the mile marker owners manual for mine and it says to get them from calling them at the 800 number. AND the box was definatly not some generic chineese looking thing it was a decent looking full color box. maybe the E8000 is a rebox but the PE9500 is not.

Don't know where you got your info.

...but here is my experience with Milemarker E8000 winches.
My first Milemarker Winch came in a generic Chineese looking box and had a owners/parts manual inside. Guess where it said to get your replacement parts... go ahead and guess. That's right HF. When I called Milemarker, they owned up to the fact that they sourced though HF for that winch and put their name on it. In other words, it was a rebox.

The second winch I purchased a year later came in the same sort of box, generic, had the same winch in it, and had the same exact manual with the exception of where it said HF, it now said Milemarker.

If you look though the catalog of Chinese winch manufactures, you start to realize that these are not copies, but are actually the originals that importers like HF, Milemarker, Ramsey, T-Max, Superwinch and others use to get an entry level winch out to the public at a reasonable cost, and of course, a bit of profit to themselves.
