why do some ppl beat their rigs so much?

sean nailed it, the first few hurt, especially the first big one. after that though it just doesnt matter so much. mines a dd and as long as the roof is still intact thats all that matters.

mine is on that road...

in between trail rides, mine sits in a garage....who's going to see it besides me?:
You suck!
Mine sits in the alley behind my house, some people think it is a stollen car.
The only time mine sits in the garage is when it is broken.
BTW Randy, the rear axle will be out again, want to help me put it back in the garage agan? ;)

its cuz he has a girlfriend. Trust me dude, girls are great. I love 'em, i'll never go gay cuz f&*k that sh#t. But if or when you become single again, your jeep will get 10000 milllion times awesomer in about 3 months. You stop caring about dirt in the seat so she doesn't get her skirt dirty, but rather, "hmmm, i could take her to a nice dinner...OOOORRR, spend that money towards some skidplating! YEAH!"

Trust me, that's what happens.

Chris

and to add my thoughts...

After i spend all of my summer earnings on parts and aftermarket goodies for my jeep, i am out of cash for the "dirt cheap" front left fender.

And when i do get cash for doing some odd job, I look at the prioritys - and to me - performance is what its all about

Say I come into $230

that could be a fender, paint matched, trimmed and installed, fix my sagging door hinges, pull out the largest dent on the drivers side, fix the cracking and peeling paint on the roof -

or that could be a front aussie locker...

what am i saving for? an aussie locker...

Well this turned out exactly how I thought it would. I guess I must be doing something wrong thinking that a rugged trail rig cannot look good w/o being a mall crawler.

I never said take it to a body shop and spend alot of money. Fix it your self. Except for the rear 1/4 pannels and a few other areas many parts are dirt cheap to replace. I just thought that some other people might be proud of their vehicle enough to keep it looking good in between trail rides. Stupid me, doh!

And btw my girl friend has a tj with 35's so she did not mind it when we took my xj to prom. She did not want a limo any way.

I wheel my xj and about a week after wheeling it I clean it and sometimes i wax it. Just cause its clean does not mean it aint wheeled or its a mall crawler. Its pretty cool when your buddys pick on you at school b/c its clean and then you take it wheeling in between classes and show them up when they get their yota stuck.

Take it for what you will, i was merely making an observation and asking a question.

an observation? who do you think you are, isaac fawking newton?

She does not care about dirt when we wheel her 97 tj. i just like to keep my jeep looking good. it is possible to wheel have fun and not trash your jeep. a hammer does wonders for fender dents and bent metal.

so is that why your xj sat up for 2 years and your mj still isnt wheelable :D

Exactly. I had to take some time out and be a responsible adult getting situated in a new house, new town, new job, yada yada yada. It didn't keep me from wheeling what I had readily available though. Now that things are getting under control I can play with my toys again. In this case one is getting armored before I ruin it, and the other is already ruined so I'll just make it more functional.

Lets take a moment to review the cool words in this post:

... Dirt in my seat is the least of my problems... getting the passenger side door to open sometimes is.... rough.

I turn gay? and put skidplates on my awesomer jeep?

Ok then a slight compromise. dent the rear 1/4 but or make soem sheet metal plating for more protectionand cover up the dents. The look good.

I was kind of thinking the same thing...If I fixed all the damage I inflict on mine I could buy another jeep to beat up in a short amount of time....Body damage is $$$$.

I guess why I try to keep my car and my truck in great shape but beat the hell out of my jeep.

...

Well this may all be a matter of perspective. For some, fixing a damaged fender may entail cutting off the mangled part and a broken window can be fixed by either removing the broken glass(If it'll never be a problem again, i'd say it's 'fixed') or if weather tightness is a major concern then replaced with clear packing tape/plastic.

It all boils down to whether you buy into the form-follows-function or function-follows-form school of thought.

Well I am going out to the shop for a few hours so bash the topic all oyu want and i will be back later to see how this turns out. I have this feeling that the dents will win.

I was just seeing if anyone shares in my opinion.

I don't get you....You ask for peoples opinions....They give you their opinions....no one is bashing you...no one is saying you are stupid.

What do you want? Everyone to be just like you?

xtrememtbiker85,

Don't get your feelings hurt over this topic. I kinda figured from your original post that maybe you were looking to hear from some people that shared your view of the XJ and what it means to you. What you've just discovered is that you are in the minority -in a sense.

That's the great thing about NAXJA, it's intention is to support those that are enthusiastic about the Jeep Cherokee XJ. Enthusiasm is expressed in many different forms. The fact that we have so many different forums shows that there is plenty of diversity here. There are guys that like their XJ mostly stock, mild trail modified, hardcore trail modified and extreme trail guys who have been infected with the bug that causes the removal of sheetmetal and replacing it with tube. And that only represents the guys that 'wheel their rigs. We also have a limited few that have built SCORE race rigs, 1/4 mile drag rigs, low-riders, "make-it-look-like-an-urban-assault-vehicle", and the bling crowd who think the XJ should roll on 22's and crank loud-as-hell music.

Basically, the majority of NAXJA users/members are off-road freaks who enjoy putting their rig and themselves through a challenge. You represent a minority who's challenge is to keep yours looking nice while it serves a multitude of purposes for you. Be proud of that. Someone's gotta keep an XJ looking like an XJ so the rest of us can remember what ours used to look like right?

And to answer your original question as to "why do they beat their rigs?".... well Bob Loose (BLoose) might be able a good example. He got most of his damage because people kept telling him "you can't go there on 32's" then it was "Nope, not on 33's"...... proved 'em all wrong and all the dents prove it - right Bob? :laugh3:

Oh yeah, then there's the ONE member we have here that represents darn near every one of those diversities into his single rig....... John Bjorum (96Classic). Not too many rigs can be described using all these words: Pretty, caged, tubed, locked, custom axle'd, blinged, NOS injected, stroked, beadlocked, leather seat'd, air adjustable shock'd, tube door'd, cowl hood'd, bed-liner'd belly, waxed, parks it in a "garage-mahal".... and has been to car shows as well as conquered many of the nastiest trails that Moab, Tellico, Paragon and Colorado have to offer .... Now that guy really IS sick....... :laugh3:

As i read some posts it seemed like in order wheel the jeep it needs to be bashed up stuck and broken. and if thats not happening than you must not be having fun b/c you are babying it too much.

to be completely honest i knew coming in to this topic that people were going to turn it in to a mall crawl vs rock crawl scenario. i just wanted to know if anyone else appreciated the look of the rugged jeep w/o having to turn it in to a totally different animal. i wheel my rig and enjoy traversing rocks and mud. but when i get home i was my jeep. i hate what DC is doing to jeep and i know almost everyone else does and i like to make my xj recognizable as an xj to keep the original product of the xj apparent.

i never understood why a person would beat the living tar out of a rig with so much work in to it. i know thats the point of the build in the first place is to see what it can do. i just felt as though i was singled out b/c i take the time to fix damage and clean off the mud. that does not make it a pavement punder.

so to restate my original question i was just wondering why people never fixed the dents or damage instead of just getting a new one. and this was answered in previous posts.

btw around here there is still a good number of xj's on the road but most are newer and hte older ones are getting crushed faster and faster at the u pulls. it seems like you have to get all you want in one day b/c it will be gone the next around here.

oh and anyone want to buy my 94 xj for sale? need at least $2000 asap. ask for details.

no offense taken to anyones comments.

I'm pretty sure you're the only one in this thread to mention the term "mall crawler"...
