What'cha Break at JV? (Carnage tally)

Thanks Cal. I don't think the truck will be moving until after the next M&G.

What else is wrong with it? Or won't have the new shaft until then?

I picked up the shaft this morning but it's got some bad blowby so I should probably have the engine rebuilt before taking it out again. After driving out to JV we were on the dunes and I had oil dripping out of the airbox. After cleaning it up as best I could it didn't drip any on the slow trails but once back on the highway it was back.

No reinforcement on my frame rails meant the stock bumper mounts let go during a pull on the drivers side. Lost a taillight, pushed the already dinged passenger fender back a little, major rash on the driveshafts, rear yoke looks pretty bad, and another set of tires down the tubes.

I pushed the power pretty hard on one obstacle, and put a major "S" bend in the passenger side leaf. I still cannot believe the rear u-joints didn't let go.

Still could have drove it home if I had to.

At the top of the big waterfall, Paul asked me if I was broke. I said no. What I shoulda said was, "Yea, my F'in skull". :D

Wrecking Ball is sheer brutality on 33's, and a basically stock configuration, but a hell of alot of fun and a major sense of accomplishment. It turned out to be one of the hardest trails I've done there and I took more pulls than all of the other trails combined.

I'm continually amazed at what a Cherokee will put up with.

Amen!

If you are from AZ, Superior rear Dana44 shafts are not superior.

What did the repair of these shafts take? The one time I broke a rear shaft, it looked just like these two with the jagged break and rounded corners from turning in the housing while broke. However, the pieces of mine managed to egg shape the inside of the carrier where the carrier bearing sits therefore egg shaping the carrier bearing journal, breaking the carrier bearing, and jamming the carrier in place real bad. There was still a chunk of axle shaft stuck in the carrier too that I couldn't get out. Weeks later and many $$'s later, I had new axle shafts (alloy this time), a new ARB carrier piece, new bearings, and a new ring and pinion. How did you fix Ricks broken shafts on the trail? Jeff

Rick fixed his own junk, 'cuz he's cool like that...

He took the broken side out and tried to use a large retracable magnet (magnet on the end of an antenna, basically) to pull the broken stub out. The stub was wedged, so he took the other side out and pushed the stub out from that side. Both sides didn't go at once -- one was one day, the other the next. Both times he basically did the same thing.

Jeff, Rick got lucky and was able to get the broken stub out both times without having to remove the carrier. I think the second day he got it out with a magnet, which rarely works.

Actually Ryan Brown beat the broken piece out with a long side D30 axle and the magnet was just used to fish it out along with some of the broken pieces. There was a lot of them.

Having the spool made getting to pieces out pretty easy. No crosspin to get in the way, just a hollow shaft. Using the front axle shaft to beat the piece out was a cool idea. The splines on the spool did seem to get a little boogered up from the break, but nothing a little "persuasion" with the new shaft and a hammer couldn't fix.

The first break took about a half hour to fix, the second took about an hour, cause the jeep fell off the jacks. DOH!

I'm probably going to be buying a friends waggy 44's. Rear has a spool with 33 spline Mosers and the the front has a lockright, Warns, CTM's, hubs and 5.38 gears.

post ride update to my carnage. whatever i hit that drove my slider into the rear passenger door flexed it enough to pop the skin off the door. where it sits against the wheel well. great ride!

Thanks for the description of what the repairs took. I'm guessing you knew right away that you had broken a shaft and proceeded to pull it apart right then and there, right? I think that would have saved a bunch of damage with my break, but I really didn't know it had broken. It wasn't an obvious thing on a certain boulder or anything. Just noticed that one side wasn't turning at some point! :) Jeff

LOL :roflmao:
and my alignment stayed straight...

Mine were 1 ton TRE's with 7/8" threads. Not sure how it bent, but they don't bend easy!

Sorry to hear about the rig! Looks like you had fun though.

Well, maybe I had more carnage than I thought!
Doc called today and asked how my pain has improved since the run.
I said about 10-15%. It seems that Radiology took a closer look at my x-ray's. I have to go get a CT scan because he said that fractures on your spine don't show up well on x-rays! There is a bit of swelling around my L-5 and it seems that I may have fractured it.
I'm laughing about it because my Wife said I was fine. I though so too. But on the bright side, I will get a refill on my percoset!
goodnight.
