What rear end and why?

Jump This

Just another minion!
Recent threads have made mention about what rear ends people are running...so lets here it.
I run a 8.25 with a Detroit locker and crmo shafts , rolling 33 MTR's. I have yet to break anything (I hope I don't regret typing that!!) I don't have any plans (yet) to run anything else, either tires or diff.
What are you running and why?
(and before anyone says I only run puss trails...don't... :laugh3: I think a number of you have been with me wheelin' before!!)

I had 8.25 29 spline and no slip and when going to 33's I got d44 cause:
1. I didn't want c clipped axles
2. I wanted 4.88's
3. I wanted to get rid of that lower lip that always seems to catch on everything (even though I shaved it pretty good, it still hung out there)

I'm runnin a Dana 44 rear, I decided to upgrade last winter when the pinion bearing went out on my D35, the reason I got it was it was a bolt in and I couldnt find a 29 spline 8.25. Some time this summer it will get a either a spool, lockrite or some sort of selectable locker.

29 spline 8.25" with yukon shafts and a detroit. 33x12.5 BFG muds. No problem with the setup yet, and I don't plan to change it.

I would like to have the D44 for C-cliplessness (I like that word) but it isn't worth the money to me.

D44, larger axles bearings, explorer disc brakes, 33 spline chromoly shafts, and a Detroit with 4.89 gears.....................

I know the limitations of the 8.25.
1. you can only run up to a 4:56 r/p.
2 29 splines are as big as you can get.
3 C-clips
4 They came stock.
But I know my limitations as well
1. I only run 33's
2 4:56 with an auto works better than 4:88's and a stick. (or at least as well)
3 I couldn't even tell you why C-clips would bother me. I carry a spare axel.
4 I'm a cheap bass turd.

With a c-clip axle you have to pull the diff cover and the cross pin to be able to remove the c-clip in order to remove a shaft. The clip is the only thing holding the axle in place (drum brake) and if you break a shaft it could just slide all the way out and leave you dragging on the brake parts.

I just installed a d44 over the weekend. 4.56 gears, detroit locker, and 33" xterrains.

I run this because I was afraid to run 33"s on a locked d35.

I have a 31 spline Ford 8.8 in the works... I'll probably put a Detroit and 4.88s in it.

Pros:

-Stronger than a Dana 44
-Disc brakes
-Virtually unlimited gear selection (no carrier break either)
-Good aftermarket support

Cons:

-c-clip axles - but with disc brakes, what does it matter?
-Axle tubes can rotate on the carrier (not anymore, Ron welded those on for me. Thanks Ron!)
-Low ground clearance (not anymore, it's shaved. Thanks again Ron!)

That being said, I just beat the crap out of my old dana 35 yesterday on the "Backway to Crown King" trail outside of Phoenix without taking any bypasses (rated a good 3.5 after the rains last spring washed out parts of it). I'm running 33s and a Lockrite locker and have had ZERO problems with that axle in the four years I've been wheeling it. It's the older non-c-clip, full floater model, so maybe that has something to do with it. I know I'm on borrowed time with 33s on there, though...

SH*T!!
Now I gotta' drain fluids....pull covers....cross pins.... :rattle:
I HATE WHEELING!!!
Have we not seen pictures of people with small trees tied to the side of
thier rigs just to hold the darn wheels in place?? :lecture:
I honestly didn't know......anyone got a spare 44 lying around?

Well I am one of the few that think there is absolutely nothing wrong with the 8.25.. So what if its c-clip, convert to disc brakes, alloy shafts, and stop worring about it..

Now with that said.. I have recently installed a 9" into the rear of my xj, only because I was given the axles originally for a trade... I went with the strange nodular third, detroit locker, 4.88's, and warn full float kit with explorer disc brakes.. I liked the setup except for the detroit I was sold would not unlock at all, making it the noisest diff I have ever heard... Since then I have gone to a true trac in the rear with going back to 410's for better fuel mileage... I drive this rig almost every day, and sometimes accross country for work... So I wanted something absolutely reliable...

When the money permits, I will change the third out for a true hi-9, and finish my hp44 install...

Just my .02$ worth....

Oooop. Crap. I better wait to get started on the homebrew until after I'm done welding next time. :D

Then why did you ask?

I have an 8.8 on 315/75/16s soon to be a HPD60 shaved on 37s.

With the 8.8 on 315/75/16s I have 10.5" of clearance.

Cal has approx 10.3" of clearance with a 8.25 on 315/75/16s .
Mark (Grzz701) has 11.75" of clearance on 35s with a shaved D60.

What's your cleance and set up too?

I run a shaved 35 spline HPD60 (Tera60R) with a Detroit and 5.13's with Explorer disc breaks. The reason for running this axle is because I never want to break.

Running any particular axle successfully depends a great deal on what trails are run regularly.

I'm running a d44, 4.88 with a detroit and 30 spline chromo shafts. It's fairly strong, it was bolt in, and in the unlikely event i break more shafts than I carry spares, its very likely others will have parts i can borrow. It's less common to find overstock of 8.8, 9" and d60 spares on the trail. I haven't measured the ground clearance with it yet (we ran out of daylight installing it) but I will do so tonight.

I was very happy with the 29 spline 8.25 and no-slip, but in the progress to go bigger/better/stronger, I needed deeper gears and stronger shafts.
