Jesse keep in mind most of these guys posting have never run a trail in the PNW. We have alot of trails that are width and length filtered. Some trails at TSF are 80in filtered, and Evens creek the whole trail system is 80in max. So keep that in mind.
With that said i do agree that you can run full widths and obtain a narrow wheel base. Full widths especially a 60, 14 bolt are very strong axles, and if your going to run 39.5's your going to need them.
Something else to think about we do alot of snow wheeling and weight is a big factor. Those big tires (with the same footprint) with those big axles will add alot of weight to your xj. If you went with dana 44's out of a waggy with 36's you would have the same ground clearance as with 39's and a dana 60. Plus you would weigh a whole lot loss and float better.
Again like we talked about i don't understand your fascination with running 40in tall tires but to each your own. I run 35's and have run every trail at TSF and don't think there are many trails i could not run in the PNW. I also do extremely well in the snow. I would really think about all the money and frustration with running tires that big before you take that big leap on a high school budget.
